Spiritism and Psychology is a study of paranormal phenomenon from the standpoint of an accomplished psychologist. In this book, originally published in 1911, Flournoy explains why spiritism, the belief that people can speak to the dead, is impossible. He insists that spiritism can be explained through worldly and scientific means, if one admits some "supernormal" powers to average humans. Piece by piece, Flournoy deals with the major claims of spiritism, exposing how each can be explained through different means. An essential read for anyone interested in the occult, this book was considered a groundbreaking work in its time. Swiss professor THEODORE FLOURNOY (1854-1920) wrote a number of books on spiritism and is best remembered for From India to the Planet Mars (1900), which studied Hlne Smith, a medium who recalled past lives, including one lived in India.

Excerpt from Spiritism and Psychology One or two words may not be out of place as to my reasons for writing a book of this character. I believe that scientific investigators - physicians, physiologists, psychologists - have made a great mistake in neglecting for so long the so-called supernormal or metapsychical phenomena, under the pretext that there is nothing to be found but illusion or charlatanism, and have left its study exclusively to spiritists, theosophists, mystics, and occultists of all kinds. Fortunately, to-day it is almost like forcing open a door which is already open to insist upon the necessity of seriously occupying one's self with this subject, since the official savants themselves have ended by perceiving that there is here a realm worthy of serious investigation, whence issues unexpected light as to the nature of the constitution of our being and the play of our faculties. It will be a great day when the subliminal psychology of Myers and his followers and the abnormal psychology of Freud and his school succeed in meeting, and will supplement and complete each other. That will be a great forward step in science and in the understanding of our nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Man's Unconscious Spirit: The Psychoanalysis of Spiritism If at the end of a busy day we reflect upon what have been the day's experiences, we are struck with the constant change of sensations, from sight to sound, to touch, to taste, to smell, to pleasure, to pain, and so on incessantly. The busiest days in which we hurry from one detail of routine to another or pass from one exciting scene into another, leave no opportunity for imagination. When rest finally comes, we find ourselves thinking over the many incidents and, like the flickerings of a dying fire, our memories spontaneously flash into consciousness, and then vanish, in an apparently incoherent manner. Like a string still vibrating, after we have set it in motion by our day's activities, our minds naturally reverberate the events of the day, and we finally prepare our minds for sleep. We might say that during the day we have sensations of various kinds, and, at the end of it, memories, that have come to us in our moments of relaxation. For some people the easiest thing in the world to do is to sit and day-dream. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
