Come per i volumi precedenti dei Saggi teologici, anche questo titolo deve essere inteso come una specie di leitmotiv, che riecheggia in libere variazioni attraverso la maggior parte degli articoli qui raccolti. Solo uno d'essi fa risuonare il motivo espressamente, anch'esso senza la pretesa di esaurirne le intrinseche potenzialità. Per quest'intero libro composto di saggi è circostanza caratterizzante invece che l'oggetto principale sia abbordato dai lati più diversi, che sovente esso s'affacci ad inattese svolte del cammino e si presenti in modo nuovo allo sguardo. Esiste sì una luce centrale, ma ne divengono visibili solo diverse irradiazioni. Forse uno spirito assetato di sistematicità, che vorrebbe senz'altro costruire, dai frammenti, una totalità, potrebbe mettere in ordine le pietruzze e poi comporle in un mosaico. L'autore diffida di tali intraprese, che vogliono trar fuori il mysterium dal suo nascondimento ed esibirlo svelato. Dío abita in una luce inaccessibile. Il tema tuttavia, intorno a cui ci si aggira senza pretese, è tale da interessare in modo centrale Chiesa e cristiani. Nel divergere dei due aspetti uniti nel titolo sta il motivo d'ogni minaccia e d'ogni atrofia del cristianesimo attuale. E poiché è assai difficile congiungere rinnovatamente gli aspetti, una volta che siano stati separati, preferibilmente cerchiamo di considerarli dalla sfera donde hanno origine, nella quale essi, fecondandosi eternamente in modo reciproco, stanno intrinsecati l'uno nell'altro. La riforma non si compie mai col reincollare i pezzi rotti; ma: «Dal tronco di Isai germina un pollone, e un germoglio spunta dal suo ceppo».

“Dolci come cantici d’amore e meravigliosi” definiva P. Filippo Scarpa i primi edifici religiosi del XII e XIII secolo appartenenti all’Ordine creato da S. Francesco d’Assisi, cristallizzando così in poche, semplici, ma efficaci parole, la ragione per cui il sentimento di giubilo dell’animo umano per la bellezza del Creato si è fatto materia. La gratitudine umana verso l’Altissimo ha scelto il mezzo più consono per manifestarsi, “l’arte pel bello, pel vero, pel buono”. Tali furono sin dalla loro nascita le chiese francescane, tra cui i due esempi di cui Teano si fa vanto: edifici in cui ogni pietra porta con sé una storia fatta di trasformazioni dell’ideale religioso, di adattamenti al gusto artistico del momento, di eventi bellici e naturali. Le chiese e i conventi teanesi di San Francesco e di Sant’Antonio vissero proprio questo stesso rapporto di evoluzione continua, di metamorfosi all’incontro tra l’immaterialità invisibile dello spirito e la visibilità materiale della pietra.
