Divine, mysterious deliverance from key deadly moments in his life. A retired Philippine diplomat relates actual instances of "possible miracles" ("spiritual encounters") he experienced, to show God lovingly watches each of us regardless of who we are. God can marshal powers from the Spiritual realm to deliver us from evil on earth, he says. He recounts incidents of such possible divine intervention: being spared from a bombing in Manila that killed nine and wounded over a hundred in 1971, deliverance from a terrorist bomb in Istanbul in 1998, being spared from a fusillade of iron pellets in London in 2000, his wife's being saved from deadly illness in Turkey in 2003, deliverance from possibly fatal accidents in the U.S.A. and the Philippines, assistance in worrisome situations, and instances involving striking or life-changing coincidences. He unveils his belief: before birth our Father had mapped out what could be a rigorous life-course to enable us to attain a spiritual growth germane to our eventual return to Him through Christ-despite our wayward past. By relating his fearful brushes with danger, he reminds us that we are God's children to strengthen our faith. Born into humble circumstances and reared by religious parents in Dumaguete, Philippines, the author early on tackled worrisome problems: lung disease in college, libel suits as an editor, and a physical assault on his life. He and family were enabled, he believes through divine help, to land in America, finishing a Ph.D. in Northern Illinois. After joining the Philippine Foreign Ministry, he became a Fellow in Harvard. He boldly resigned from the Marcos regime to support Corazon Aquino in 1986. After a consultancy at Tufts, he became Consul in the Philippine Embassy, Washington DC., Consul General in Turkey and Oman and Philippine Ambassador to Cuba and Caribbean countries.

This book develops a new and innovative way of understanding how language is used when people describe their spiritual and mystical encounters. Early chapters provide overviews of the nature of spiritual encounters, how commonly they occur, and the role of language. The book then develops a unique way of understanding the dynamics of talking about spirituality, using original research to support this perspective. In particular, Peter J. Adams explores how this characteristically vague way of speaking can be viewed as an intentional and not an incidental aspect of such communications because certain types of vagueness have the capacity to engage the imaginative participation of receptive listeners. This expressive vagueness is achieved by embedding missing bits, or “gaps,” in the flow of what is described and these in turn provide sites for listeners to insert their own content. Later chapters focus on practical ways people (including helping professionals) can improve their skills in talking about their spiritual encounters. All content is situated in café conversations between four people each of whom is, in their own way, concerned with the challenges they face in converting the content of their encounters into words.
