We long for an index, a glossary, and less use of quotes around words that don't require them. Halfway through, our mental labors are rewarded with chapter 7, "Our Incomparable Souls." This is the heart of the book, a behind-the scenes look at the soul and a parting of the veil of forgetfulness produced by the ego. Pillow discusses studies on fetal consciousness, which provide the strongest circumstantial evidence for existence of the soul, and gives a moving testament to the soul's purpose: to instill compassion, empathy, and benevolence in its human host. The second half of the book flies by, as we greedily gobble mainstream studies on energy healing, brain waves, and the need for face-to-face friendships in an electronically connected world. Tucked unobtrusively at the end of chapter 11 are three paragraphs titled "For Me Personally," in which the author shares his private definition of faith. Such unheralded brevity from a man who once considered entering the Christian ministry shows great respect for the reader and for the role of science in decoding religion and spirituality. The final chapter implores us "to at least consider the possible importance of these concepts and commentaries for your loved ones and for you." Pillow believes that by knowing there is a God, a soul, and a Heaven, we can sustain our inner journey toward purpose and meaning in our lives; and that by recognizing our shared humanity, we can save civilization. One hopes and prays this is true as murders by children, mass killings by governments, greed, corruption, materialism, apathy, mental illness, addiction, and more threaten to suffocate humanity's life force. Pillow is an accomplished author, having written or edited five educational textbooks, several dozen articles, one murder mystery involving reincarnation and the paranormal, and five books about the search for self and the meaning of life through science, self-awareness, and spirituality. The rise of modern science has brought with it increasing acceptance among intellectual elites of a worldview that conflicts sharply both with everyday human experience and with beliefs widely shared among the world’s great cultural traditions. Most contemporary scientists and philosophers believe that reality is at bottom purely physical, and that human beings are nothing more than extremely complicated biological machines. On such views our everyday experiences of conscious decision-making, free will, and the self are illusory by-products of the grinding of our neural machinery. It follows that mind and personality are necessarily extinguished at death, and that there exists no deeper transpersonal or spiritual reality of any sort. Beyond Physicalism is the product of an unusual fellowship of scientists and humanities scholars who dispute these views. The majority of people believe in the existence of God and follow different paths to realize Him. It is good to have a spiritual belief, but is not enough. The distance between us and God remains. The confusion remains and we still, sort of, look for evidence of God. It’s because we haven’t experienced Him. The belief is not fully converted into faith. By working within, strengthened Belief leads to strengthened faith, and strengthened Faith leads to the actual Experience. The twenty-first century calls for new insights into spirituality by analyzing the deepest parallel between various scientific theories and what is experienced by realized masters. People are already realizing that the traditional practices in all religions, in the name of spirituality, are mere child plays and thus cannot lead to the realization. Being in the scientific age, people are now reasoning within and more appreciative of spirituality, when explained scientifically. The efforts of this book are, to transform your Belief into Faith through introspection, reflecting on what scriptures say, and primarily through pieces of evidence that are scientific in nature. Let’s briefly think it over: If lord Rama, Lord Krishna, lord Buddha, Saint Guru Nanak, Lord Christ, Prophet Mohammad, etc. are the Gods, then was there no God before them? Now, what were the religions before these great masters came? If Christ is God for Christians and not for the whole of humanity without conditions, can He be the Absolute, the God? Same with the Gods of other religions. God, through these Masters, pointed out something, but are we moving forward in the direction shown by these great Masters or just holding on to those symbols and worshiping the hand that has shown us the way? It is important to remember the great masters, but is it helping us realize The Truth, through traditional ways? To worship Jesus, because He is Jesus, is not enough. We need to embrace the universal ideals He taught and strive to be like Him. “God is present everywhere, in temples, churches, etc. too, but just going there will not persuade Him to reveal Himself. Churchgoing is good, but daily meditation is better still. We are to do both. Because we may certainly have inspiration from going to church, but from daily meditation we will receive even greater upliftment.” Yogananda Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God”, Which means God is and there is a kingdom also, and it is possible to seek it. The kingdom of God is within and is to be sought only within the soul. We are to seek God scientifically. Just like the fish, which is made from water, is born in water, is inside the water, and is inside the water, it, is not experiencing anything other than the water alone. Still, the fish, if its consciousness gets evolved enough, can ask the question, What is the water? How to respond to this query? In the same way, despite being made of God, by God, we are inside God; God is within, and God is all around. Ironically, we are still looking for God. It’s like God, seeking God in the human form, which has forgotten its true identity. But we are not fish. The solution to any problem cannot be had from the same level of consciousness in which the problem is perceived. The efforts here are to help you realize who you truly are. And the moment you realize yourself, you realize God, there and then. You will realize that ONLY GOD EXISTS and You are that!
