The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually There is a process of spiritual growth. Do you know what it is? Can you guide others along its path? The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually overviews this process with a step by step approach using nearly sixty real-life vignettes, clarifying charts, over 250 documented scripture citations, supportive Christian music from fifth through the twenty-first centuries as well as referencing important spiritual authors. Dr. Haynes writes for all Christian helpers including Bible study and church leaders as well as pastors, spiritual directors and small group facilitators. In addition to encouragement and increased understanding of spiritual growth, spiritual helpers will also receive a toolbox to assist with the on-the-road spiritual difficulties including types of prayer, effective forgiveness, dealing with pain, spiritual Dark Nights, subversive words and demons from the unconscious. Those familiar with psycho-social and faith developmental theories will appreciate, Dr. Haynes' comparisons with the process of personal spiritual growth. Endnotes and a bibliography as well as general and scriptural indexes round out this extensive work. The book's overall purpose is to assist Christians to grow in their personal relationship with God and in mature Christ-likeness in order to affect the Community of God in the world. Richard A. Haynes is an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), receiving his Doctor of Minister degree, with distinction, from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois in spirituality and small groups. Gathered in this booklet are the heartfelt stories of more than 75 A.A. members from around the world who share what the phrases "Higher Power” and "God as we understood Him" mean to them. The title — the first three words in the second of A.A.’s Twelve Steps — hints at the book’s theme: that recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous is not a destination, but a spiritual journey that takes place over time, while living “life on life’s terms.” Sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, but always honest, the stories in Came to Believe present a wide range of perspectives on what spirituality can look like in the context of Alcoholics Anonymous, demonstrating how the A.A. program is best described as “spiritual but not religious.” The rich diversity of voices we hear reflect the infinite number of paths available to those seeking freedom from alcohol. From newcomers just finding their way to longtimers seeking new perspectives, A.A. members of all kinds may find in Came To Believe added insight and inspiration to breathe enrich their recovery journey. Came to Believe has been approved by the General Service Conference.

"Faith and reason, belief and experimentation, spirituality and science in our modern era, we have come to view these concepts as inherently dichotomous. How can spirituality be considered a science when the very foundation of modern science was established in contrast or even in opposition to certain systems of thought inherited from religious traditions?" "Through a series of innovative and thought-provoking studies Dr. Bahram Elahi redefines spirituality us an experimental science rooted in concrete and empirically verifiable realities."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Despite the best of intentions, many Christians fail to lead the type of committed spiritual life that they desire. The pace of life and cultural pressures drive them to be over-committed. They lack space and time in their lives to regain their spiritual poise. This book reviews the historical practice of personal spiritual retreat and demonstrates that it has as much applicability to the modern Christian as it has had to countless others over the centuries. Not only is there historical precedent, but biblical as well. Besides presenting the theological arguments for experiencing retreat, the book also gives practical insights into the timing, location, and activities in which to engage while on a personal spiritual retreat. There is also a discussion on how to keep the spirit of retreat alive throughout the year so that ultimately the retreat benefits not only the individual Christian but also the world in which they live.
