Aus Anlass des 750. Todestages des großen Sufi-Dichters Dschalal ad-Din Rumi am 17. Dezember 2023 legt Otto Höschle, dessen erste vollständige deutsche Versübersetzung des Masnawi aus dem Persischen bereits vielseitiges Lob geerntet hat, hier zweihundert der schönsten Ghasele aus Rumis riesigem Diwane-e Schams-e-Tabrizi vor. »Aus hundert Menschen ragt der Liebende als Mond heraus, der zwischen Sternen glänzt« (aus Ghasel 29). »Mag auch die Welt voll Dornen sein, ist doch das Herz des Liebenden voll Rosen« (aus Ghasel 73). »Es gibt wohl kaum einen mystischen Dichter -- in welcher Religion es auch sei --, der dem Leser einen ähnlichen Reichtum an Gedanken, eine solche Vielseitigkeit und, zu gleicher Zeit, einen so persönlichen Ausdruck seiner höchsten mystischen Liebeserfahrung zu vermitteln weiß wie Maulana Rumi. Seine Lyrik ist voll von Anspielungen auf den Reigen der »Tanzenden Derwische«, ja, in vielen Gedichten können wir geradezu die Rhythmik des Tanzes spüren, empfinden, wie sich der Dichter selbst in eine immer höhere Spannung gesteigert hat, wenn er schildert, wie alle Wesen, berauscht vom Wein der ewigen Liebe, sich dem Reigentanz hingeben, sobald der Geliebte sein mondgleiches Antlitz zeigt. Wir finden Anspielungen auf die Worte des Koran und Zitierungen aus ihm in zahlreihen Versen. Immer wieder führt Rumis Poesie zu den höchsten Wahrheiten und auch das Alltäglichste wird zum Symbol der ewigen Liebe, der ewigen Sehnsucht. Er war ein Liebender, der die tiefsten Geheimnisse der Religion nicht in theologischen Diskussionen fand, sondern im liebenden Gebetsgespräch mit Gott« (Annemarie Schimmel).

Hintergrund: Aufgrund der Besatzung von Palästina und der Vertreibung der Palästinenser aus ihrer Heimat (1948 und 1967) zögerten die palästinensischen Dichter insbesondere in der Zeit von 1950 bis 2000 über die Liebe zu schreiben. Bei den ständigen Kriegen, Opfern, Leid, Vertreibung und bei dem Elend im arabischen Raum schien es schwer und unpassend, über die Liebe, das Glück und das Unglück des Einzelnen zu schreiben. Als Palästinenser versucht Khaled Shomali, einen großen Bogen zu spannen, um diese tiefe Lücke zu überbrücken. Als Dichter bildet er eine Brücke, um die Reise von der bitteren, drückenden Realität zu einem offenen Horizont zu ermöglichen. Das Buch enthält Liebesgedichte in den Sprachen Arabisch und Deutsch und eine Einführung in die Geschichte der arabischen Lyrik. Die Gedichte wurden vom Autor selbst ins Deutsche übersetzt. Dem Lektorat gehörten Marianne Merbeck-Khouri, Osama Khouri, Kurt Stremmel-Kray und der Autor an. Nur durch die intensive Zusammenarbeit konnte der vorliegende Gedichtband in dieser Form erscheinen.
