Lilyan Kesteloot est une pionnière de l’enseignement des littératures africaines, qu’elles relèvent de l’oralité ou de l’écriture littéraire. Ses importantes contributions à l’émergence de ce champ ont motivé ses disciples, ses collègues et amis, à réunir les vingt articles du présent ouvrage. Leurs analyses constituent un bouquet d’hommages orientés vers les nombreux sujets et les thématiques variées qui ont préoccupé Madame Kesteloot. Professeur à l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) de Dakar et directrice de recherche à l’Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire (IFAN), elle y a fondé et dirigé le Laboratoire de littératures et civilisations africaines. À la Sorbonne (Université Paris IV), elle a animé des séminaires de recherche en littérature africaine francophone. Elle est également à l’origine de la création du Réseau euro-africain de recherche sur les épopées (REARE) qui a inauguré le dialogue scientifique direct entre les spécialistes des deux continents. Au carrefour des littératures explore, dans un premier temps, la question des épopées et des chansons de geste. Les chapitres suivants sont orientés vers des études de cas consacrées à d’autres genres littéraires (roman en français ou en langues africaines, autobiographie, poésie...). The French invaded Algeria in 1830, and found a landscape rich in Roman remains, which they proceeded to re-use to support the constructions such as fortresses, barracks and hospitals needed to fight the natives (who continued to object to their presence), and to house the various colonisation projects with which they intended to solidify their hold on the country, and to make it both modern and profitable. Arabs and Berbers had occasionally made use of the ruins, but it was still a Roman and Early Christian landscape when the French arrived. In the space of two generations, this was destroyed, just as were many ancient remains in France, in part because “real” architecture was Greek, not Roman.
