An Extraordinary Bicycling Adventure Spontaneous Revolutions: Seeing America One Pedal at a Time is the story of a middle-aged couples' spur-of-the-moment bicycle journey across the country. These two out-of-shape, inexperienced cyclists rode from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. It took four (sometimes) grueling months. Being overweight and over 50 was one thing. They also knew next to nothing about bikes - didn't even know how to change a flat tire when they left! And, they chose to travel unplugged. Why do this seemingly Insane thing? Well, beyond the "wild hair," they wanted to meet the people of the tiny towns and byways of America. It's also a testamentto overcoming challenges, staying motivated and enjoying the kindness of strangers. People constantly surprised them with support: Invitations to their homes and cheerleadlng along the way. The experience reaffirmed their faith in humanity, proving how many good people there are across America. There are moments of hilarity, fear, surprise, struggle, tenderness, frustration, beauty, danger and love. The book leaves the reader with confidence and inspiration: if these two can do it, you can do it- no matter your dream. Spontaneous Revolutions is also a love story. Author Liza McQuade and her husband reconnected in their marriage, learned to let go of judgement and found they loved each other more than they thought possible. The book was written after McQuades' husband passed away unexpectedly. It's not maudlin, it's an uplifting account of two people who undertook a huge leap of faith and learned to live In the moment. The trip proved to be a metaphor for taking on any big challenge. Whether you're making an important decision or scaling a mountain, don't psych yourself out. Tackle what's thrown your way head-on, even if you have to get off your bike and walk. Most importantly, it's a reminder to take life one pedal at a time.

Provides answers to one of the enduring paradoxes of mass social change. From the events of May 1968 to the Arab Spring and Occupy, we have seen social movements develop spontaneously around the globe propelling thousands and, at times, millions of people into the streets to demand an end to oppression. “In order to make sense of such events, the authors draw on George Katsiaficas’s conception of the ‘eros effect,’ which picks up and takes off from concepts developed by Herbert Marcuse. This effect describes moments in which the instinctual human need for justice and freedom undergoes a massive spontaneous awakening. Drawing on Marcuse, the concept foregrounds the instinctual foundation of the desire for freedom, in which a biologically-based pleasure drive—eros—is given free play.” — from the Foreword by Peter Marcuse However, even as the eros effect provides a valuable framework for understanding spontaneous global uprisings, Katsiaficas has acknowledged that the concept has remained underdeveloped. Spontaneous Combustion provides an introduction to the eros effect along with a series of elaborations, applications, and critical rejoinders concerning its implications. A truly interdisciplinary venture, the book features contributions from cutting-edge scholars and activists on the frontlines of today’s struggles.

Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject History - Basics, grade: 42/50, , language: English, abstract: Revolutions have always remained the fascination of many academics. Studied and exploited in a wide variety of forms for an even larger range of reasons, by both dictators, historians and sociologists alike, the framework through which revolutions are analysed and broken down, as well as the principles of revolution, has evolved over the years as a greater number of ‘revolutions’ began to occur, with increasingly divergent characteristics. Much debate has ensued, largely focused on the different types of revolutions, the role of structure versus human agency, how ‘revolutionary success’ can be measured and defined, and whether or not revolutions must solely be studied in context and hence greater comparative and generalising statements cannot be effectively drawn from the study of revolutions.

The second novel in a two part dystopian epic--part satire, part action, part fantasy--about a political crisis in America sometime in the future. As Quark, Dr. Nicholas and Pindar wend their way through the O-zone to save Quark's hothat son, from torture and death, Mulro leads millions of pilgrims in a march to The Hall of Phenomena, the glittering temple of The Synchronized Society. Meanwhile, the President and the Council plot to destroy the Mulro Nation, the multimillion-person movement gathered around Mulro, which they fear will overthrow the status quo and establish a new order based on freedom and community. As a mysterious cult leaves their remote European village headed for The Synchronized Society on a religious mission to save the world with a miraculous artifact, a rebel force shadows John Grimme's army. Hundreds of millions of cringing souls watch The Second Coming on transmission panels in their dark rooms. Annette Sands and her Network are succeeding, yet teetering on the brink of disaster as pilgrims, government forces and rebel fighters head toward an apocalyptic showdown. Will this be a massacre of greater magnitude than Crooked Foot or the start of a Spontaneous Revolution?

Every now and then, things explode. Riots, uprisings, revolutions, new and bizarre social groups spring up seemingly from nowhere. Our standard histories tend to treat these as oddities, if treated at all, or as misguided responses to hard times, limited by lack of responsible leadership. Here's a People's History to puncture that balloon. From the Cynics & Spartacus through the Levelers, Diggers & Ranters to the Revolution of the Carnation, the San Francisco Diggers, Red Guard of Shenwulian, Brethren of the Free Spirit, Guevara, the Provos & the Metropolitan Indians. Nearly 100 episodes of revolt and utopia which popped up without a plan or a leader from the ancient Greeks to the present. Fremion lives in Paris where he participated in the May '68 orgasm.

The State Of Our Disunion written by Eugene Goodheart and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Political Science categories.

The US Constitution resists centralizing authority by granting equal power to the three branches of government, as well as the individual states. The risk inherent in the separation of powers is that the absence of a spirit of compromise can lead to the disintegration of the union. Eugene Good heart argues that the current union is in peril due to an unwillingness to cooperate on the part of contending parties. He explains how and why it has reached this point, while identifying common ground between thoughtful liberals and conservatives.Ironically, President Barack Obama, who from the outset affirmed the spirit of compromise and union, has governed in a time marked by apparently irreconcilable conflict between and within parties, and the branches of the government. Those on the extremes of the political spectrum view compromise as weakness and a lack of conviction, while those in the middle view it as necessary. Good heart argues that principle and compromise are not antagonists. He also describes the media's role in shaping and distorting public perception of political realities. Many themes that preoccupy our politics and will doubtless continue to do so in the future are addressed in this work, including gross income inequality, governmental regulation of the market, the US's role as superpower, and the relationship between liberty and equality. This book will be of interest to those concerned about contemporary political life.
