During the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) sports emerged as a popular phenomenon that critics often derided as a degenerate fad. But sports and art institutions as well as avant-garde artists looked more closely at sports' potential to rejuvenate a populace demoralized by World War I and cultivate a more dynamic, harmonious society. This book examines images of sports in the visual arts of Weimar Germany to explore how institutions and artists forged a link between sports and art and gave new visual form to notions about the ideal body. It looks at the 1930 Berlin art exhibition Sports as Cultural Factor and sports at the Bauhaus and investigates the sports pictures of László Moholy-Nagy, Anton Räderscheidt, and Willi Baumeister as exemplary case studies. Besides examining Weimar sports culture and its link to art, this study illuminates the complex ways in which artists used the motif of the athletic body to define humans' relation to modernity while addressing issues of industrialization, gender, mind-body dualism, and the promotion of sports. This study examines the role of modern sports in constructing national identities and the way leaders have exploited sports to achieve domestic and foreign policy goals. "Modern sports" were introduced to Asia in the late nineteenth century as an innovation from the West, concurrently with the development of modern society in Asia. This book traces the historical developments of sporting cultures in Asia in specific local contexts – including Singapore, China, Myanmar, Taiwan, the Philippines, and India – and their intersections with larger social developments of colonialism, postcolonialism, nationalism, and the building of modern Asia and its place in a globalized world. The case studies herein present the social history of modern team sports with standardized rules such as basketball and cricket, and less familiar sports such as fives and chinlone, as they vacillate between global and local perspectives. It is often assumed that a recognisably modern sporting culture did not emerge until the eighteenth century. The plethora of physical training and games that existed before 1700 tend to fall victim to rigid historical boundaries drawn between "modern" and "pre-modern" sports, which are concerned primarily with levels of regulation, organization and competitiveness. Adopting a much broader and culturally based approach, the essays in this collection offer an alternative view of sport in the early modern period. Taking into account a variety of competitive as well as non-competitive forms of sport, physical training and games, the collection situates these types of activities as institutions in their own right within the socio-cultural context of early-modern Europe. Treating the period not only as a precursor of modern developments, but as an independent and formative era, the essays engage with overlooked topics and sources such as court records, self-narratives, and visual materials, and with contemporary discussions about space, gender and postcolonial studies. By allowing for this increased contextualization of sport, the collection is able to integrate it into more general historical questions and approaches. The volume underlines how developments in early modern sport influenced later developments, whilst at the same time being thoroughly shaped by contemporary notions of the body, status and honour. These notions influenced not only the contemporary sporting fashion but the adoption of sports in elite education, the use of sports facilities, training methods and modes of competition, thus offering a more integrated idea of the place of sport in early modern society.
