Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Individuum, Gruppe, Gesellschaft, Note: 1, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Veranstaltung: Kommunikation ohne Gesellschaft?, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Was heißt sprechen?“ Diese Frage stellt sich der französische Soziologe Pierre Bourdieu in seinem gleichnamigen Buch, das den Untertitel „Die Ökonomie des sprachlichen Tauschs“ trägt und 1982 in Frankreich erschienen ist. Schon im Untertitel wird deutlich, dass Bourdieu hier keinen rein sprachwissenschaftlichen Ansatz verfolgt, sondern sich gegen die strukturalistische Sprachwissenschaft vor allem von Ferdinand de Saussure wendet. Er kritisiert dabei die Reduktion der Sprachtheorie auf das Sprachsystem, das die Realisierung und die gesellschaftliche Praxis von Sprache ausblendet. Saussure betrachtet seine Semiologie als Teil der Sozialwissenschaften, doch durch seine Auffassung von Gesellschaft als eine von ihren Mitgliedern unabhängige Größe vernachlässigt er die Aspekte der Produktion und Reproduktion der Sprache durch die Individuen. Auch die sozialen Umstände der Akteure, wie etwa ihre Klassenzugehörigkeit, ihr geographisches Umfeld oder ihr Bildungsgrad, werden außer Acht gelassen. Doch gerade auf diese Aspekte kommt es Bourdieu in seiner Theorie an, in der er besonders die Sozialbeziehungen und die daraus entstehenden Machtverhältnisse berücksichtigt. Er erweitert damit den Kommunikationsakt von einem bloßen sprachlichen Austausch auf einen dahinter verborgenen Austausch verschiedener Machtverhältnisse zwischen den Sprechern. Das Anerkennen und Erkennen von autorisierten Sprechern beeinflusst nach Bourdieu stark das kommunikative Handeln und sein Gelingen. Er bezieht zudem die Sprachfähigkeit, den sprachlichen Habitus eines Akteurs und den sprachlichen Markt mit ein, der mit einem System von Sanktionen und Zensuren auf die Handlungsmöglichkeiten einwirkt und sie determiniert. In der vorliegenden Arbeit sollen anhand der Theorie Bourdieus Bedeutung und Einfluss von sozialen Dispositionen, Gewalt und Macht auf die Sprache dargestellt werden. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass in Bourdieus Ansatz Kommunikation nicht ohne Gesellschaft funktioniert und diese als Notwendigkeit für die kontinuierliche Reproduktion von Sprache angesehen werden muss. Doch auch die Sprache selbst übt Einfluss auf die sozialen Beziehungen und die Herrschaftsverhältnisse in einer Gesellschaft aus, in dem sie durch den sprachlichen Habitus der Akteure die Klasseneinteilung anerkennt, legitimiert und reproduziert.

Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt an dieser Stelle an und beschäftigt sich mit der Fragestellung, was Pierre Bourdieu genau unter Sprache versteht und wie er den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Macht begründet. Dies thematisiert er vor allem in seinem Werk „Was heißt Sprechen? Zur Ökonomie des sprachlichen Tausches“, welches auch für die folgende Arbeit die Grundlage bildet. Es ist bekannt, dass die Sprache für das Verhalten der Menschen untereinander und damit für das gesellschaftliche Leben von großer Bedeutung ist. Trotz ihrer Wichtigkeit wird sie oftmals als schlicht gegeben hingenommen und als ein reines Instrument der Kommunikation verstanden. Eine einheitliche Sprache innerhalb einer Gesellschaft, ist eine Grundvoraussetzung für ein funktionierendes System. Es gibt zahlreiche Beispiele in der Geschichte, die dieses auf das extremste verdeutlichen. Ein Beispiel hierfür bietet in Sri Lanka die Abschaffung von Tamil als Amtssprache. Sri Lanka ist ein Inselstaat, bewohnt von zwei Bevölkerungsgruppen, mit zwei verschiedenen Sprachen, tamilisch und singalesisch. Während der Kolonialherrschaft von Großbritannien wurden viele Verwaltungsbeamter von Tamilen, da sie die englische Sprache beherrschten, besetzt. Die Singalesen, die die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung bilden, strebten nach der Kolonialzeit die Abschaffung von Tamil als Amtssprache an, um so den Machtvorsprung der Tamilen einzugrenzen. Somit blieben viele öffentliche Berufsmöglichkeiten den Tamilen verwehrt. Der Zugang zu den Hochschulen war fast unmöglich. Die Tamilen fühlten sich als Minderheit unterdrückt und dies war der Beginn des Bürgerkriegs. Die Folgen verdeutlichen in wieweit die Sprache die Gesellschaft bestimmt und das in der Tat mit Sprache auch eine gewisse Macht ein her geht.
