This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 im Fachbereich Geowissenschaften / Geographie - Allgemeines, Grundlagen, Note: 1,0, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) (Institut für Geographie und Geoökologie), Veranstaltung: Seminar Geoökologie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit fokussiert den Begriff der Landschaft, welcher seit seiner Einführung durch Humboldt und Bürger einen ständigen Streitpunkt in der deutschsprachigen Geographie darstellt. Das Verständnis und die Bedeutung von Landschaft in der Disziplingeschichte der Geographie gehen immer auch einher mit vorherrschenden Paradigmen und Methoden. Die Landschaftsbegriffe in der Nachkriegszeit sind dabei geprägt von quantitativen Methoden und räumlicher Analyse. Landschaft wird als Ausschnitt eines großen Ganzen verstanden, das sich aus mehreren Bestandteilen zusammensetzt. Jede Landschaft enthält alle Teile dieser übergeordneten „Monade“. Spätestens mit dem Kieler Geographentag 1969 bahnt sich ein Paradigmenwechsel an. Das Aufkommen des Konstruktivismus führt zu erkenntnistheoretischer Reflexion und radikaler Kritik an den Positionen der klassischen Schule. Die neueren Landschaftskonzepte nehmen auch Symbole und Repräsentationen in den Blick. Landschaft wird zunehmend Objekt von Beobachtungen zweiter Ordnung. Kühnes landschaftsbezogene Operationalisierung von Poppers Drei-Welten-Theorie zeigt, dass nicht nur mehrere Arten von Landschaften existieren, sondern dass sich diese auch interdependent zueinander verhalten, was den Landschaftsbegriff weniger statisch macht. Auch über die Geographie hinaus haben sich Landschaftsbegriffe verbreitet, die die Abkopplung des Begriffs vom einfachen physischen, statischen Raum verdeutlichen. Arjun Appadurais fünf „scapes“ sind geprägt von menschlicher Interaktion, weniger von physischen Räumen oder Lagebeziehungen. Landschaften können sich aber auch über Klang bilden. Diese werden als Soundscapes bezeichnet und können akustisch erschlossen werden. Betrachtet man die Musik, finden sich etliche Beispiele für klassische Stücke, welche mit musikalischen Parametern (Klang-)Landschaften erschaffen. Landschaft hat in der deutschen Sprache eine lange Geschichte. Ein entscheidendes Problem des deutschen Landschaftsbegriffes war und ist seine Funktion als Homonym: Er umfasst sowohl die Bild- als auch die Objekthaftigkeit.

There is no generally valid, recognised definition of what landscape actually is. On the basis of its relatedness to the environment, to aesthetics, territory, society, politics, economics, geography, planning, ethnology and philosophy, the concept of landscape is considered to be a "composite" notion shaped by a thousand years of Central European ideas and of literary and art history. In other words, the very term "landscape" is ambiguous and it is used in different ways both in the scholarly world and everyday speech. The aim of this volume is to present various possible approaches to the phenomenon of "landscape". Far from laying any claim to be exhaustive or comprehensive we have simply tried to do justice to the overarching interdisciplinary approach of the Zentrum für Landschaftsinterpretation und Tourismus (ZELT: Centre for Landscape Interpretation and Tourism) by singling out and addressing individual instances of this fascinating multifaceted phenomenon.
