This book introduces an approach to elementary adult foreign language learning that is based on theory (in particular, complexity thinking and social constructivism) on the one hand, and years of practice using various unconventional methods on the other. A key assumption of the Scaffolded Language Emergence (SLE) approach is that a language need not be taught or learned in the conventional sense of these terms. Instead, it is argued, language can ‘emerge’, that is generate and maintain itself through authentic use. The study and application of rules is considered most useful in later stages of learning, while intuition and abductive thinking can be used very effectively to initiate or bootstrap naturalistic learning processes – even in adults learning a foreign language.

Sprache ist magisch. Dies mag mancher von uns bereits öfter gedacht haben - in welcher Situation auch immer. Und dies ist sie wirklich. Ob wir dabei an die Kommunikation mit anderen Menschen denken, die verbal und ebenso non-verbal erfolgen kann; ob diese in unserer Muttersprache oder in einer oder sogar mehreren Fremdsprachen abläuft. Wann immer Sprache magisch ist, ist sie gleichzeitig produktiv; wann immer sie produktiv ist, ist sie oft auch magisch. Die Magie der Sprache bezieht sich dabei auch auf ihre Vermittlung, die einen zentralen Gesichtspunkt der Produktivität darstellt. Diese Zusammenhänge und damit verbundene Fragestellungen sind Gegenstand des vorliegenden Bandes. Vor dem beschriebenen Hintergrund behandeln die hier in drei Sprachen - Deutsch, Französisch und Spanisch - veröffentlichten Beiträge beispielsweise neue Entwicklungen zu produktivitätssteigernden Lernerstrategien, zur Wortschatz- und Grammatikvermittlung, zur Förderung der Schreibfertigkeit, zur Fremdsprachenvermittlung durch Kunst, zu sprachpolitischen Fragen und übersetzungswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen ebenso wie zu derzeit verfügbaren Lernplattformen. To initiate its new Ph.D. Program in Transcultural German Studies, jointly offered by the University of Arizona and the University of Leipzig, the Department of German Studies at the University of Arizona organized an international conference on Transcultural German Studies in Tucson from March 29-31, 2007. Conference participants sought to define the nature of Transcultural German Studies. This new, interdisciplinary field of inquiry investigates the cultural landscapes of the German-speaking world in the light of globalization and inter- and transcultural contact. The contributions that comprise the volume are by scholars who work in a number of related fields, exploring transcultural phenomena - past and present - evident in selected literary, filmic, musical and historical texts. Zur Einführung des neuen, interdisziplinären Studiengangs Transcultural German Studies, den die University of Arizona und die Universität Leipzig gemeinsam anbieten, organisierte das Department of German Studies der University of Arizona vom 29. bis 31. März 2007 in Tucson eine internationale Konferenz. Die Teilnehmer hatten es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, das Wesen der Transcultural German Studies zu definieren und näher zu beleuchten.
