In der vorliegenden Abhandlung wird die Entwicklung der bulgarischen Sprache als einer südslawischen Sprache von der ältesten Überlieferung als „Altbulgarisch“ über „Mittelbulgarisch“ zum Neubulgarischen dargestellt. Dabei ergeben sich Aspekte der Verwandtschaft zu den anderen südslawischen, aber auch zu den west- und ostslawischen Sprachen. Ein wichtiger Gesichtspunkt sind die Übereinstimmungen mit anderen Balkansprachen, dem Albanischen, Rumänischen und Neugriechischen, die sogenannten „Balkanismen“. „Eurolinguistische“ Übereinstimmungen lassen sich aber auch mit anderen europäischen Sprachen aufzeigen. Sprachpolitische Fragen und das Bulgarische als Sprache der EU seit 2007 runden das Bild ab.

Gegenstand des Buches ist die grammatische Struktur der modernen kroatischen Standardsprache.
