Seit den 1970er Jahren ist mit dem Aufkommen des lernerzentrierten Unterrichts im Kontext eines selbstgesteuerten Lernens ein Wandel der Rolle der Lehrerin bzw. des Lehrers hin zu einer Lernbegleiterin bzw. einem Lernbegleiter sowie einer Lernberaterin bzw. einem Lernberater einhergegangen. Das Thema der Sprachlernberatung ist präsenter geworden und immer mehr Institutionen im DaF-Bereich bieten eine solche Beratung an. Dabei kann der Rahmen einer Sprachlernberatung ganz vielfältig sein, etwa kursbegleitend oder kursunabhängig, als individuelle Beratung oder Gruppenberatung, als persönliches Gespräch, in Form von einer Videokonferenz, als Sprachtandem, in Selbstlernzentren, per E-Mail oder Chat.
