St Helens Rugby League Club has been host to a fantastic cavalcade of talent since 1895, with generation after generation of players maintaining the club's traditions of playing great rugby and winning trophies. The town itself has long been a successful breeding ground for rugby talent, producing such household names as legendary scrum-half Alex Murphy and modern-day superstar Keiron Cunningham. Yet the club has also searched far and wide to bring the best players from all over the world to Knowsley Road, from the Welsh valleys to South Africa, New Zealand and Western Samoa. The stories behind the signings are similarly varied and wide-ranging: Cliff Watson, a Cockney by birth, became the world's number one front-rower after answering an advertisement for 'big strong forwards' placed in the national press by the club in the early 1960s. Later, there was the intrepid swoop for centre Paul Newlove in 1995 - the world-record transfer that triggered such phenomenal success for the Saints in modern-day Super League. There have been players who have excelled not just for their club but also in the international arena, like tough-as-teak loose forward Vince Karalius and Paul Sculthorpe. Others have had less celebrated careers beyond St Helens, but all have made a significant contribution to the history of the club and become favourites of the Knowsley Road faithful. Illustrated throughout and featuring a biography and statistics for each player, this celebration of 100 of the club's greatest will delight all Saints fans.
