The epoch from the eighth century B.C.E. up to the exile is marked by a great transformation in the society of ancient Judah, as reflected especially in the texts of the pre-exilic prophets. A relatively egalitarian society transforms into a class society, wherein a class of wealthy landowners is opposed to a growing class of impoverished farmers. The main factor in this development is the indebtedness of the farmers. All the forces of society and state are afflicted by this transformation. This book endeavours to describe this transformation as precisely as possible, by examining the prophetical texts , and other biblical and epigraphical materials. Unlike the theories of "annuity capitalism" or "antique development" the work especially stresses the role of the state and its organs in this transformation. Die Zeit vom 8. Jahrhundert bis zum Exil ist die Zeit eines gewaltigen gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs im antiken Juda, wie er sich vor allem in den Texten der vorexilischen Propheten widerspiegelt. Eine relativ egalitäre Gesellschaft transformiert sich in eine Klassengesellschaft, bei der wenige Grundbesitzer einer größer werdenden Klasse verarmter Bauern gegenüberstehen. Von diesem Umbruch, dessen Hauptfaktor die Überschuldung der kleinen Bauern ist, werden alle Kräfte der Gesellschaft und des Staates erfaßt. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, anhand der einschlägigen prophetischen Texte, des übrigen biblischen sowie des epigraphischen Materials diesen Umbruch möglichst umfassend zu beschreiben. Anders als bei den gegenwärtig vertretenen Theorien des "Rentenkapitalismus" und der "antiken Entwicklung" wird dabei besonderes Gewicht auf die Rolle des Staates und seiner Organe bei der gesellschaftlichen Umwälzung gelegt. Das Buch wendet sich an Exegeten, die auf dem Feld der Sozialgeschichte Israels, der vorexilischen Prophetie und der althebräischen Epigraphik arbeiten.

Für die meisten Niederländer und Flamen ist Österreich in erster Linie ein beliebtes Urlaubsland, dessen Bild von den Bergen Tirols, den Wiener Lipizzanern und den vielen, vielen Heurigen geprägt ist. Während sich die österreichische Herkunft Thomas Bernhards und Peter Handkes schon herumgesprochen haben dürfte, verbinden – abgesehen von einem Kreise der Eingeweihten – nur die wenigsten Niederländer und Flamen Franz Werfel, Stefan Zweig, Theodor Kramer, Christoph Ransmayr und viele andere mit der 1918 aus der Donaumonarchie hervorgegangenen, 1945 ein zweites Mal gegründeten Republik. Dass die Frage nach dem spezifischen Charakter der deutschsprachigen Literatur aus Österreich im Land ihres Entstehens sehr wohl ein Thema war und ist, ist nur eines der vielen Leitmotive im vorliegenden Band über die österreichische Literatur des 20. The international legal system has weathered sweeping changes over the last decade as new participants have emerged. International law-making and law-enforcement processes have become increasingly multi-layered with unprecedented numbers of non-State actors, including individuals, insurgents, multinational corporations and even terrorist groups, being involved. This growth in the importance of non-State actors at the law-making and law-enforcement levels has generated a lot of new scholarly studies on the topic. However, while it remains uncontested that non-State actors are now playing an important role on the international plane, albeit in very different ways, international legal scholarship has remained riddled by controversy regarding the status of these new actors in international law. This collection features contributions by renowned scholars, each of whom focuses on a particular theory or tradition of international law, a region, an institutional regime or a particular subject-matter, and considers how that perspective impacts on our understanding of the role and status of non-State actors. The book takes a critical approach as it seeks to gauge the extent to which each conception and understanding of international law is instrumental in the perception of non-State actors. The volume contains the contributions to a symposium in which specialists in different fields worked together in the attempt to throw by their cooperation more light on the conditions - theological convictions and worldview, political climate, influence of state officials, educational institutions and churches - which were influential in the development of biblical studies in the second half of the 19th century. The discussion originated with a special problem: the thesis of William Farmer, one of the co-editors of the volume, that the appointment of Heinrich Julius Holtzmann, who defended the priority of the gospel of Mark as the oldest synoptic gospel, to the New Testament professorship in Strasbourg in 1872 was the result of a direct intervention of the emperial chancellor Bismarck in the context of the kulturkampf, who wished thereby to weaken the Roman Catholic position defending the supremacy of the chair of St Peter by the authority of the gospel of St Matthew (Mt 16,18). The question belongs in the broader context of the presuppositions of Bible exegesis in the second half of the 19th century. As both editors agreed that the matter is not yet finally settled, it seemed to be essential for coming to deeper insights into the conditions under which biblical exegesis was enacted in the 19th century to broaden the scenery and to include other aspects that might throw more light on a period widely unknown to many scholars belonging to the present generation. The nature and role of positive law has largely been neglected in recent Protestant theology and social ethics. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law introduces and critically summarizes a tradition in Continental Protestant thought about human law, drawing on writings of Barth, Brunner, Ellul, Thielicke, Wolf, Pannenberg, Huber, and Kreβ, many of which have not been translated into English. The book argues that law is an essential political and social institution within developed societies, one that is normative and dependent on an encompassing vision of justice but that also necessarily reflects the contemporary pluralism of those societies. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law argues that theological and ethical perspectives on positive law developed by Protestant thinkers have a place in reflection on positive law, provided they are conceived and expressed in a manner appropriately respectful of the diversity of contemporary opinion regarding the expression of religious perspectives in the public arena.
