Die Schrift Staat und Revolution verfasste Lenin im August bis September 1917 in der Illegalität. In einem Brief an A.M. Kollontai vom 17. Februar 1917 (neuen Stils) teilte Lenin mit, dass er das Material über die Frage Marxismus und Staat fast fertig vorbereitet habe. Es ist eine Sammlung von Zitaten aus Werken von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels nebst Auszügen aus Büchern von Kautski, Pannekoek und Bernstein mit kritischen Bemerkungen, Schlussfolgerungen und Verallgemeinerungen W.I. Lenins. Nach dem ursprünglichen Plan sollte die Schrift Staat und Revolution aus sieben Kapiteln bestehen, doch hat Lenin das letzte, VII. Kapitel, Die Erfahrungen der russischen Revolutionen von 1905 und 1917, nicht geschrieben. Erhalten ist nur ein ausführlich ausgearbeiteter Plan dieses Kapitels. Zur Herausgabe des Buches schrieb Lenin in einer Notiz an den Verleger, falls er sich "mit der Beendigung des VII. Kapitels zu sehr verspäten oder es übermäßig anschwellen sollte, müsste man die ersten sechs Kapitel gesondert, als ersten Teil erscheinen lassen ..."

Iwanowski bezeichnet. Unter diesem Pseudonym wollte Lenin sein Buch erscheinen lassen, da es andernfalls die Provisorische Regierung beschlagnahmt hätte. Das Buch wurde jedoch erst 1918 herausgegeben, und die Notwendigkeit des Pseudonyms entfiel. Die zweite Auflage des Buches erschien 1919 mit dem von Lenin in das zweite Kapitel eingefügten neuen Unterabschnitt Marx' Fragestellung im Jahre 1852.Als Einleitung veröffentlichen wir eine Schrift des Genossen Per-Åke Westerlund, Vorsitzender der Rättvisepartiet Socialisterna (RS), der Schwesterorganisation der SAV in Schweden. Der Text wurde im Jahr 1999 als Vorwort einer Neuauflage von Lenins Schrift Staat und Revolution verfasst.Die Einleitung des Genossen Per-Åke Westerlund ist als Einstieg in eines der wohl wichtigsten Werke Lenins, Staat und Revolution, sehr zu empfehlen. Per-Åke Westerlund erklärt hier wichtige Zusammenhänge und die historische Umstände, unter denen diese Broschüre geschrieben wurden. Er greift aber auch die heutige bürgerliche Hetze gegen Lenin auf und setzt sich mit den Argumenten derer auseinander, die sich gegen die Oktoberrevolution von 1917 und die Machtergreifung der Arbeiterklasse in Russland stellen.Der Autor stellt den Behauptungen und Verleumdungen der Bürgerlichen das tatsächliche Handeln der Bolschewiki gegenüber und entlarvt den Mythos, dass der Bolschewismus direkt zum Stalinismus führte und die Verbrechen der stalinistischen Diktatur direkt aus Lenins Handeln entsprangen.
