This new collection of essays by West Germany's most distinguished Roman Catholic theologian covers the two broad areas indicated in the title. The first half discusses the Christian understanding of God; the place of Christianity in the modern world; the modern sense of freedom and history and the theological definition of human rights; christology and anthropology; and the possibilities of a new spiritual christology in a trinitarian setting. The second half discusses various aspects of the church: as universal sacrament of salvation; as the place of truth and as communion. Two final studies examine the continuing challenge of the Second Vatican Council and the fundamental form and meaning of the eucharist. An extended introduction considers systematic theology today and the tasks which confront it.

John Henry Mackay was born on 6 February 1864 in Greenock, Scotland. His Scottish father died when Mackay was only nineteen months old and his German mother returned with him to Germany, where he grew up with German as his mother tongue. He later learned Englishand translated a volume of American and English poems into Germanbut did not write it well. After one year as an apprentice in a publishing house, he was a student at three universities, but only as an auditor. With a generous allowance from his mother, he traveled much and began his long career as a writer. Fame came in 1891 with his propagandistic The Anarchists, but Mackay wrote in a variety of literary forms and some of his lyric poetry was set to music by Richard Strauss. Mackay died in Berlin on 16 May 1933.

The Swimmer is one of the very first literary sports novels. Although not a competitive swimmer himself, Mackay was a passionate swimmer and well acquainted with the scene of competitive swimming and diving in Berlin around 1900. This historical picture of the sports world at that time will be familiar to today ́s readers in many ways, but may surprise us in its details, for example, of competitions no longer widely practiced, such as "diving for plates" and "swimming with obstacles." For this reason it is a valuable historical document. It is also an exciting sports story with "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." But The Swimmer is much more: it is a fascinating psychological study of the rise and fall of a champion swimmer in his single-minded pursuit of his sport - and fame. Mackay ́s protagonist Franz Felder was "born to swim" and we follow his first, happy dip into the water to his last, fatal plunge. All attention is on young Felder, but other characters are clearly delineated: his wise coach, the equally single-minded sculptor, the seductress from the international demi-monde - last, and alas least, the loyal, devoted fan. The story is told with insight and compassion, as Mackay, the "omniscient narrator," looks into the deepest feelings and motives of his protagonist, whom Mackay ́s biographer has described as "an enchanted beast of the fairy tale books, under whose rough exterior is hidden a prince"-a price who "never found the charm that would have brought out his true character." Mackay makes all of this come alive for us, so that we sympathize with Felder even as we perceive the flaws that bring about his downfall. The book can be read on several levels: as a historical document, a thrilling sports story, a human drama. In every case, it is a good read.

Nazi Looting written by Gerard Aalders and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

The Nazi looting machine was notoriously efficient during the Second World War. In the Netherlands, 8.5 million citizens suffered losses estimated at 3.6 billion guilders. Approximately one-third of these losses were borne by Jews, who comprised only 1.6% of the total population. In todays terms, the German occupiers stripped the Jewish population of assets worth $7 billion.Nazi Looting offers a comprehensive history of the Dutch experience and demonstrates how reputable indigenous institutions acted as willing collaborators. Beginning with a survey of international law and various definitions of 'looting', the author shows how the Germans systematically robbed Dutch Jewry through a variety of means that gave the outward appearance of honest trading. Forced to sell under duress and at unreasonably low prices, few dared refuse the German on the doorstep when threatened with prison or incarceration in a camp. The plundering was total and systematic. In May 1940, a team of highly trained art historians, linguists, musicologists and literary experts arrived immediately behind the victorious German troops to catalogue the vast collections for Hitler. From 1941, Jews were compelled to deposit all their money into a bank called Lippmann, Rosenthal Co. The name of the bank itself was a cynical ploy since it was taken from a respected, Jewish-owned Amsterdam bank and presented as a new branch. This bank, however, simply channelled money into the Third Reich with the help of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, insurance brokers and other well-established Dutch banks. Once the Jews were deported, their houses were emptied and the contents used to re-furnish bombed out areas of the Reich. In common with many other formerly Nazi-occupied countries in Europe, the Netherlands has been unable to retrieve many of its pre-war assets. More than fifty years after the wars end, 20% of its most important pre-war museum exhibits and approximately 80% of the less important works remain untrace
