Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, 23: Stability of Tidal Inlets: Theory and Engineering focuses on all aspects related to tidal inlets on littoral drift shores where freshwater flow is small or non-existing. The selection first tackles the development and configuration of tidal inlets and inlet hydraulics. Discussions focus on flow dynamics and nearshore transport, combinations of waves and currents, sediment transport and storage in the tidal entrance, offsets of tidal inlets, natural inlet regimen, migration of inlets, and origin of tidal inlets. The manuscript then examines sediment transport in tidal inlets, stability of tidal inlets on littoral drift shores, and design and improvements of coastal inlets. Topics cover ocean entrance, overall stability condition, hydraulic and sedimentary principles, non-scouring channels, transport of sediments in wave agitated waters, and sediment transport by combined wave and current action. The publication explores improvements by structures, including natural bypassing, types of improvement, and bypassing by structures and bypassing plants or arrangements. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in the stability of tidal inlets.

Along much of the shoreline of the world, tidal inlets play an important role in nearshore processes, providing links between the coastal oceans and protected embayments. Their study is of particular importance not only for the understanding of fundamental processes in coastal oceanography but also for engineering and the proper management of the delicate equilibrium of our shorelines. This volume, based on the International Symposium on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets held at Woods Hole, MA, presents the reader with an overview of contemporary research on these important features. The coverage includes: - mathematical modelling, including a review of inlet hydrodynamics, - observations on hydrodynamics, - sedimentology and morphology, - tidal deltas, - processes and policies pertaining to sedimentation, and the - impacts of shore protection and dredging in beaches.

Honorable Mention, Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Professional Publishing Maurice Schwartz, Editor of the much acclaimed Encyclopedia of Beaches and Coastal Environments (Hutchinson Ross, 1982) has now brought forth a new volume with a fresh interdisciplinary approach that includes geomorphology, ecology, engineering, technology, oceanography, and human activities as they relate to coasts. Within its covers the Encyclopedia of Coastal Science includes many aspects of the coastal sciences that are only to be found scattered among scientific literature. Being broadly interdisciplinary in its treatment of coasts, the Encyclopedia of Coastal Science features contributions by 245 well known international specialists in their respective fields and is abundantly illustrated with line-drawings and photographs. Not only does this volume offer an extensive number of entries, it also includes various appendices,an illustrated glossary of coastal geomorphology and extensive bibliographic listings. This Encyclopedia thus provides a comprehensive reference work for students, professionals as well as informed lay readers.

This report presents a summary of several of the important basic developments pertaining to analysis of the hydraulics and related stability of tidal inlets. The original inlet stability concept proposed by Escoffier is extended in light of recent work. The report also contains brief discussions on tidal inlet characteristics and functional design requirements as well as case studies of selected inlets on the U.S. coasts.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Coastal and Estuarine Studies, Volume 44. Coastal inlets dot the world's coastline, serving as important conduits for exchange of organic and inorganic materials between the continents and the oceans. In addition, inlets are the focal points of navigation pathways between deep water and coastal ports, a function often requiring alteration of the inlet to assure safe navigation. Particularly for inlets along mobile barrier beaches, frequent dredging is often required to maintain navigation clearances. The papers in this book primarily discuss research relating to tidal inlets along barrier beach systems and illustrate the scientific approaches appropriate for examining multiple inlet stability. The aim is to provide a scientific basis for effective management. By proper and in-depth scientific analysis, more appropriate inlet management can be effected, to the benefit of the environment and the inhabitants of coastal areas. Case examples are included that will be useful to those who may wish to pursue the widermanagement and policy implications.

The zone where land and sea meet is composed of a variety of complex environments. The coastal areas of the world contain a large percentage of its population and are therefore of extreme economic importance. Industrial, residential, and recreational developments, as well as large urban complexes, occupy much of the coastal margin of most highly developed countries. Undoubtedly future expansion in many undeveloped maritime countries will also be concentrated on coastal areas. Accompanying our occupation of coasts in this age of technology is a dependence on coastal environments for transportation, food, water, defense, and recreation. In order to utilize the coastal zone to its capacity, and yet not plunder its resources, we must have extensive knowledge of the complex environments contained along the coasts. The many environments within the coastal zone include bays, estuaries, deltas, marshes, dunes, and beaches. A tremendously broad range of conditions is represented by these environments. Salinity may range from essentially fresh water in estuaries, such as along the east coast of the United States, to extreme hypersaline lagoons, such as Laguna Madre in Texas. Coastal environments may be in excess of a hundred meters deep (fjords) or may extend several meters above sea level in the form of dunes. Some coastal environments are well protected and are not subjected to high physical energy except for occasional storms, whereas beaches and tidal inlets are continuously modified by waves and currents.
