Das Auseinanderdriften der Stiidte und Regionen in ihrer Wirtschaftskraft und Beschiiftigtentwicklung wird seit den 70er Jahren als "Trendbruch in der Raum entwicklung" charakterisiert. Dabei zeichnen sich neue Muster der riiumlichen Entwickiung in verschiedenen Dimensionen ab - von der Verschiebung region. aler Industrie- und Wachstumszentren im globalen MaBstab, tiber die Polarisierung zwischen den stiidtischen Agglomerationen bis hin zu stark akzentuierten sozial riiumlichen Spaltungen im Innern der Stiidte. Das spannungsreiche Nebeneinan der von niedergehenden Industrieregionen und prosperiefenden Dienstleistungs zentren sowie neuen industriellen Wachstumspolen, von neuen Armutsinseln in zerfallenden Stadtteilen und glitzernder Urbanitiit in metropolitanen Stadtzentren, erhiilt in den 90er Jahren einen deutlich erweiterten wirtschaftsriiumlichen Bezugsrahrnen durch die europiiische Integration und die Einbeziehung ostrnit teleuropiiischer Lander in eine "globale Marktwirtschaft" . Zu den Herausforderungen def europiiischen Integration gehoren auch die raumli chen Dimensionen eines wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Strukturwandels, der sich in den Regionen und Stiidten Europas in unterschiedlichen Formen vollzieht. Die heutige Raumentwicklung ist durch ein Spannungsverhiiltnis zwischen Tenden zen der "Globalisierung" und "Regionalisierung" gekennzeichnet. 1m Kontext def zunehmenden Internationalisierung wirtschaftlicher und politischer Verflechtun gen werden auch wirtschafts- und sozialraumliche DifJerenzen deutlicher wahr genommen. 1m europiiischen Rahmen zeichnen sich heute wachsende okono misch-soziale Strukturdifferenzen zwischen Regionen und stiidtischen Entwick lungstypen abo Wir sind mit Prozessen einer okonomisch-funktionalen Hierarchi sierung und qualitativ neuen Formen der grenztiberschreitenden Vernetzung des Stadt- und Regionalystems konfrontiert, welche die raumbezogene Planung und Politik vor neue Herausforderungen stellen.

Die Theorie der Produktion des Raumes von Henri Lefebvre hat in den letzten Jahren in den Sozialwissenschaften einen herausragenden Stellenwert gewonnen. Ihre Bedeutung liegt insbesondere darin, dass sie die Kategorien der �Stadt� und des �Raumes� in eine uebergreifende raum-zeitliche Theorie gesellschaftlicher Praxis integriert. Die bisherige Rezeption dieser Theorie blieb jedoch fragmentarisch und inkonsistent, und sie hat die zentralen erkenntnistheoretischen Pr�missen Lefebvres nicht beruecksichtigt. Zum ersten Mal wird hier eine systematische wissenschaftstheoretische Rekonstruktion dieser Theorie in ihrem zeitgeschichtlichen und epistemologischen Kontext pr�sentiert. Im Sinne einer kritischen Aneignung und Weiterentwicklung dieser Theorie entwirft das Buch die Grundlinien eines allgemeinen analytischen Rahmens zur Interpretation raum-zeitlicher Ph�nomene und Prozesse. .

This book was written with the aim of showing that even in the era of globalization developments appearing in cities are not subject to almost unconditional global forces. Rather, universal forces are decisive eventualities in the process of urban restructuring, often influencing its course and speed, yet developments and particularities within a city strongly influence the course of events and the extent to which negative characteristics of globalization might occur. Berlin, Brussels, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sarajevo and Vienna: Using these important cities the special relationship between global and local/regional forces is analyzed. The case studies were selected based on their political and cultural context and the fact that their social and political fabric was subject to major changes in the recent past. How global processes manifest themselves locally depends to a great extent on how development processes and endogenic potentials are initiated locally in order to cope with the new global economic and societal conditions.
