Die Ukraine und Weissrussland lagen als Teile des polnisch-litauischen Vielvolkerreichs seit dem spaten Mittelalter auf der europaischen lateinisch-orthodoxen Kulturgrenze. Sie beleuchtet die Urbanisierung Rutheniens im Rahmen der deutschrechtlichen Kolonisation (Magdeburger Stadtrecht) und des herrscherlichen bzw. adeligen Landesausbaus. Zugleich widmet sie sich der Frage, wie sich das Verhaltnis zwischen stadtischer Gesellschaft und der Herrschaft entwickelte und ob sich in diesem orthodoxen Teil Europas autonome, souverane stadtische Kommunen ausbildeten. Das Werk ruckt einen historischen Raum in den Mittelpunkt, der im Grenzgebiet zwischen dem lateinischen und orthodoxen Europa liegt und bisher von der westlichen stadtgeschichtlichen Forschung kaum beachtet worden ist.
