The essay describes the research that Faber did in order to inform his church members as to what kind of windows might be commissioned and placed in Grace Church, Lockport, where he was the resident Catholic priest. The essay is scholarly in tone and Faber goes into a great deal of detail. He was clearly delighted to be tasked with this important role as he says 'It is an unspeakable privilege to be permitted to place a memorial like this in the house of God, bringing ever new comfort and joy to hearts bereaved, and satisfaction to the donors; yes, if there is need to say it, it is an honor to be permitted to do it.' Frederick William Faber (1814 –1863) was a noted English hymn writer and theologian, who converted from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism in 1845. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood subsequently in 1847. His best-known work is Faith of Our Fathers. Nicholas Carter lives near Bristol and has been a journalist in the West Country for seventeen years. He is a member of The Sealed Knot.

Excerpt from Stained Glass Windows: An Essay, With a Report to the Vestry on Stained Glass Windows for Grace Church, Lockport, New York The project of four years ago is no longer an insubstantial dream. Since that time eleven windows and three mosaics have been placed in Grace Church; in them all the adopted scheme has been followed, with results more and more obviously satisfactory. This book brings together contributions from scholars from Europe and the United States to honor the theological work of Antje Jackelén, the first female Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. In Archbishop Antje Jackelén’s installation homily, she identifies the strength of the Church as a “global network of prayer threads.” This book is an honorary and celebratory volume providing a “global network of prayerful essays” by contributors from a variety of academic disciplines to creatively engage, reflect, and illuminate the theological work of Archbishop Jackelén. Prior to her tenure in the Church of Sweden as Bishop of the Diocese of Lund and now the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Jackelén served as professor of Systematic Theology, Director of the Zygon Center and President of European Society for the Study of Science and Religion (ESSSAT). While each essay intentionally embraces the theological and ministerial work of Jackelén during her academic tenure, they also venture into areas as diverse as climate change, media studies, human uniqueness, hermeneutics, time, ethics, Christian theological tradition and history, traumatology, politics and society. As the first diverse explication of the theological thinking of Archbishop Jackelén by her theological colleagues, this text provides scholars with an expansion of the scope of Archbishop Jackelén’s theological thinking and initiates laity into the impact of Jackelén thinking that combines with grace and precision the traditions of the Church, the challenges and gifts of the sciences, and the needs and longings of society and the world.

This is the first book to be published on the stained-glass art of Thomas Denny. While his name is known mainly within ecclesiastical and glass-making circles, it is likely that Denny's art is instantly recognisable to a great many more. His radiant windows in Gloucester, Durham and Hereford Cathedrals and in many churches and chapels around the UK are arguably some of the art world's best-kept secrets. Denny (b.1956) originally studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art and has translated this painterly experience into a uniquely expressive style of stained glass. His works combine the aesthetic invention of modern British forbears such as John Piper with subtle reference to the medieval and ancient past. Including eleven heartfelt essays as well as poetry and the artist's own testimony, which explore and explain the subject matter, techniques and dazzling effect of Denny's craft, this book will be of interest to members of the thriving community of contemporary glass-makers as well as anyone who has seen and been moved by his work.

This book focuses on the aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural concepts of radiance and beauty in stained glass in modern art; global exchanges between stained-glass artists in Europe and the Americas; and the transformation of stained glass from religious decoration to secular material culture. Unique features of the book include its geographic breadth, encompassing England, France, Italy, USA, and Mexico, and its inclusion of American female glassmakers. Essays consider how stained glass became an art form during this time, and show how the narrative for the figurative design drew from the Bible, mythology, history, literature, and the symbolism of the time, including popular culture such as ecology and materiality. Written for students and the general public interested in the humanities, literature, history, art history, and new media and popular culture, this book examines the visual beauty and symbolism of stained-glass windows in Europe and American cultures during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – the modern era.
