The variety of classical Greek vases may perhaps appear to the untrained eye rather monotonous. Looking at a selection of one shape may perhaps reveal the diversity in both the potter’s work and the drawing by different vase painters. And the stamnos is a particularly good shape for this purpose, associated on the one hand with drinking parties as a wine container and on the other hand, frequently used as a cinerary urn.

Dionysos, with his following of satyrs and women, was a major theme in a big part of the figure painted pottery in 500-300 B.C. Athens. As an original testimonial of their time, the imagery on these vases convey what this god meant to his worshippers. It becomes clear that he was not only appropriate for wine, wine indulgence, ecstasy and theatre. Rather, he was presenton many, both happy and sad, occasions. The vase painters have emphasized different aspects of Dionysos for their customers inside and outside of Athens, depending on the political and cultural situation.

A vision of reality in which a pre-eminent human type was defined in opposition to non-ideal 'Others' characterized ancient Greece. In democratic Athens the social structure privileged male citizens, and women, resident aliens, and slaves were marginalized. The Persian Wars polarized the opposition of Greeks and Barbarians. This anthology provides the first investigation of the delineation of otherness across a broad spectrum of the imagery of Greek art. An international cast of authors, with methodologies ranging from traditional to avant-garde, examines manifestations of the Other in Late Archaic and Classical Greek representations that particularly interest them. The 17 chapters develop a nuanced picture of the visual criteria that denoted otherness in regard to gender, class, and ethnicity and also reveal the social and political functions of this remarkable Greek imagery. Nineteen contributions by eminent scholars cover topics in Greek Epigraphy, Ancient History, Archaeology, and the Historiography of Archaeology. The section on Epigraphy and Ancient History has a particular focus on Attica, whereas material from Eretria, Delphi, the Argolid, Aetolia, Macedonia, Samothrace, and Aphrodisias widens the picture. The section on Archaeology discusses cultural variation as well as matters of cult, myth, and style, especially in Attica, from the Chalcolithic to the Roman period. The final section on the History of Archaeology reviews the early history of archaeological research at sites such as Piraeus, Rhamnous, Marathon, Oropos, Pylos, and Eretria, based on unpublished archival sources as well as on preliminary sketches and architectural drawings by 19th century artists.

A Festschrift in honor of the classical scholar, William J Slater, this volume looks at the social life of theories, artifacts, and poems in ancient Greece. The central focus of the collection is Greek theater, but essays on such typically Slaterian subjects as ancient scholarship, lyric poetry, art, and inscriptions are also included. From a literary search for the elusive Pelasgians, an iconographic analysis of illustrations of Athenian women's religious rituals, to reflections on the revival and politicisation of Greek plays in the modern era, each paper attempts to elucidate the meaning of ancient Greek words, myths, poems, artifacts, theories, and activities by reinserting them into their cultural environment.
