Information related to computer programming languages was collected about U.S. Air Force systems and about activities at other government agencies during Phase II of the Air Force Systems Command High Order Language Standardization Program. An understanding of this experience in procuring, developing, and operating weapon and defense systems involving embedded computer resources is required in order to assist decision-making regarding standardization of programming languages for Air Force use. Facts were reported on 64 U.S. Air Force systems and on related programs at NASA, the FAA, and other government agencies. An analysis of this data is presented in Volume I and system summaries are presented in Volume II. (Author).

The Air Force systems Command(AFSC) High Order Language (HOL) Standardization Program is intended to develop recommendations in HOL standardization and to provide a standardization policy implementation plan. In support of this program a summary of information gathered on Air Force programming language is presented in this report. The programming languages are those used in weapon and defense system applications, which are grouped into six application areas. Each functional area, its subareas, and its requirements are described: programming languages used within each functional area are identified and their characteristics and associated standards and environments are described. This report, which is a follow-on to MITRE WP-20334, includes refinements of the information contained in that working paper; these refinements are the result of review of WP-20334 by many interested people within the Air FOrce. A preliminary standardization position for AFSC is given in the conclusions section of this report. (Author).

Although command languages in one form or another have been in use since the earliest monitor systems of the late 1950's, they were not recognized as a major problem until the introduction of OS 360 with its famous JCL. A knowledge of the history of OSCL (operating system command languages) studies, meetings, standardization work, etc., is presented as the background for the present meeting. A complete, documented history is presented. (Modified author abstract).
