The story of the Stander Gang of bank robbers, led by former police captain, Andre Stander, and the problems they caused during 1983 and 1984. Two were finally shot dead by police, one in Johannesburg and Stander himself in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The survivor was arrested and gaoled in the UK. In 1983, former SAP Captain Andre Stander, serving 25 years in prison for numerous bank robberies and Patrick McCall who had been declared an habitual criminal and was serving an indeterminate sentence for car thefts and frauds, escaped from guards while undergoing treatment by a physiotherapist, having been taken there from Zonderwater Prison. While on the run they sprung another convict, Allan Heyl, while he was under escort at a trade test centre. Between August 1983 and January 1984, the Stander Gang, as they became known, went on a spree of armed bank robberies, often hopping from one neighbouring bank to the next, accumulating many thousands of Rands in stolen loot.

Five bank robberies. Fifteen years in jail. That was the sentence handed down to Allan Heyl in 1977. He was 26 years old and couldn't face that many years behind bars. And then he got lucky. Into the prison walked André Stander, ex-cop and bank robber - an outlaw through and through. 'We're going to get out of here,' said Stander. 'We're going to rob banks.' And that is exactly what they did. In this fast-paced, no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled memoir, Heyl exposes the hell of prison life, revels in the sheer gung-ho audacity of robbing banks, and reveals an inept and incompetent police force. As a member of the notorious 'Stander Gang', which both appalled and enthralled South Africans in the late '70s and early '80s, Allan became a career criminal. But this choice of lifestyle had its consequences ... With humour, insight and self-revelation, the last surviving member of the so-called Stander Gang turns a critical eye on himself and the times in which he operated. This book takes you into the heart of a bank robber.

Gruesome written by De Wet Potgieter and has been published by Penguin Random House South Africa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-01 with True Crime categories.

In this book, investigative journalist De Wet Potgieter follows the trail of a number of criminals in South Africa’s history. These violent crimes, perpetrated from the late 1980s into the new millennium, vary from fanatical far-rightists who killed their innocent countrymen, to assassins who executed high-profile, state-sanctioned murders. He takes the reader behind the scenes of some of the most controversial events in our country and, with his fearless style of writing, pulls you right into the belly of the beast. In Gruesome, he shares information that has never before been made public. What really happened on the night of 17 June 1992 in Boipatong? What motivated the horrific attack on Alison Botha? What caused the ostensibly conformist policeman André Stander to become an unscrupulous bank robber? Who was the first person to see the connection between Gert van Rooyen’s victims and a probable human-trafficking network? Potgieter relates how, as a journalist, he went about reporting on each of these interesting, gruesome cases. This book takes you back to the bloody newspaper headlines of yesterday.

Strangers On The Street Serial Homicide In South Africa written by Micki Pistorius and has been published by Penguin Random House South Africa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-03 with True Crime categories.

The first comprehensive study of serial homicide in South Africa is intended primarily for psychologists, students, educators and police officers who require background on the behavioural patterns, motives and other details about serial killers. It is a serious attempt to understand the mind of the serial killer so that he may be identified and apprehended as soon as possible. For, as the author points out, serial killers' prospects of rehabilitation are negative - and they need to be removed from society for the remainder of their lives. Detectives need specific training to investigate serial homicide and Pistorius believes that an understanding of the psychodynamics of serial killers should be extended to state prosecutors, judges, parole officers and pathologists. She also believes that those who work with children need to be aware that all documented cases of serial killers reveal either childhood abuse or neglect and that children displaying antisocial behaviour should be identified and receive counselling. Only in being proactive in preserving the mental health and well-being of children can the double tragedy of serial homicide ultimately be prevented.
