In this book Gerry Dye, shares the story of his early journey in the rebuilding of his life and marriage after years of fear and missed opportunities. He focuses on eight principles that formed the foundation of those early steps that led back into the light; principles such as accountability, desire, hope, and humility. With significant focus on his relationship with his wife, Margo, Eight Principles can serve as a message of hope for any couple yearning for a healthier and fulfilling relationship. But Gerry does not stray far from his own personal accountability and the understanding that any journey toward better relationships will start with personal choices and internal commitments to build a better self.

Since 9/11 and the onset of the "war on terror," the principal challenge confronting liberal democracies has been to balance freedom with security and individual with collective rights. This book sheds new light on the evolution of human rights norms in liberal democracies by charting the activism of four Canadian NGOs on issues of refugee rights, hate speech, and the death penalty, including their use of difficult, often controversial legal cases as platforms to assert human rights principles and shape judicial policy-making. The struggles of these NGOs reveal not only the fragility but also the resilience of ideas about rights in liberal democracies.

The Human Rights Act 1998 is criticised for providing a weak protection of human rights. The principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy prevents entrenchment, meaning that courts cannot overturn legislation passed after the Act that contradicts Convention rights. This book investigates this assumption, arguing that the principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy is sufficiently flexible to enable a stronger protection of human rights, which can replicate the effect of entrenchment. Nevertheless, it is argued that the current protection should not be strengthened. If correctly interpreted, the Human Rights Act can facilitate democratic dialogue that enables courts to perform their proper correcting function to protect rights from abuse, whilst enabling the legislature to authoritatively determine contestable issues surrounding the extent to which human rights should be protected alongside other rights, interests and goals of a particular society. This understanding of the Human Rights Act also provides a different justification for the preservation of Dicey's conception of parliamentary sovereignty in the UK Constitution.

Self Determination After Kosovo written by Annemarie Peen Rodt and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-02 with Political Science categories.
Kosovo embodies a key moment in the international practice of dealing with secessionist self-determination conflicts. For the first time, outside of the colonial context, and excepting Bangladesh in 1971, an entity's declaration of independence has been widely, albeit not universally, recognised. As such, the case of Kosovo has sharpened the focus and intensified the debate on the issue of self-determination conflicts and how they are managed by the international community. This volume contributes to this debate by examining Kosovo in historical and contemporary comparative perspective and by reflecting on the legal, ethical and political implications of its successful declaration of independence. This book was originally published as a special issue of Europe-Asia Studies.
