What was the light that mazed every mind's eye? What has brought a flying mountain top home from the stars, and sent investigators into the orbital habitats floating above Earth? How is this connected to a "living fossil" fungus--or to a dead madman--or to the fate of the planet? Whoever discovers the answers to these questions--FIRST!--will decide the ultimate fate of the Earth--and all humanity! An imaginative tour de force.

The X-ray standing wave (XSW) technique is an X-ray interferometric method combining diffraction with a multitude of spectroscopic techniques. It is extremely powerful for obtaining information about virtually all properties of surfaces and interfaces on the atomic scale. However, as with any other technique, it has strengths and limitations. The proper use and necessary understanding of this method requires knowledge in quite different fields of physics and technology. This volume presents comprehensively the theoretical background, technical requirements and distinguished experimental highlights of the technique. Containing contributions from the most prominent experts of the technique, such as Andre Authier, Boris Batterman, Michael J Bedzyk, Jene Golovchenko, Victor Kohn, Michail Kovalchuk, Gerhard Materlik and D Phil Woodruff, the book equips scientists with all the necessary information and knowledge to understand and use the XSW technique in practically all applications.

The authors prove the existence and the linear stability of small amplitude time quasi-periodic standing wave solutions (i.e. periodic and even in the space variable x) of a 2-dimensional ocean with infinite depth under the action of gravity and surface tension. Such an existence result is obtained for all the values of the surface tension belonging to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.

The authors study the following singularly perturbed problem: in . Their main result is the existence of a family of solutions with peaks that cluster near a local maximum of . A local variational and deformation argument in an infinite dimensional space is developed to establish the existence of such a family for a general class of nonlinearities .

Motions Of Small Boats Moored In Standing Waves written by Fredric Raichlen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968 with Anchorage categories.

A study was conducted to determine the dynamic characteristics of small boats moored with non-linear-elastic lines in an asymmetrical manner. The motions being considered are surge motions where the moored boat is allowed to move either in the direction of the bow or the stern, but not in other coordinate directions. An analytical model is proposed where the small boat is simulated by a block-body which is moored asymmetrically to a fixed dock. A method is developed from which the nonlinear restoring forces and the dynamic response of the boat in surge can be obtained. (Author Modified Abstract).

Musical Sound, Instruments, and Equipment' offers a basic understanding of sound, musical instruments and music equipment, geared towards a general audience and non-science majors. The book begins with an introduction of the fundamental properties of sound waves, and the perception of the characteristics of sound. The relation between intensity and loudness, and the relation between frequency and pitch are discussed. The basics of propagation of sound waves, and the interaction of sound waves with objects and structures of various sizes are introduced. Standing waves, harmonics and resonance are explained in simple terms, using graphics that provide a visual understanding.
