An acknowledged authority on German history and memory, Alon Confino presents in this volume an original critique of the relations between nationhood, memory, and history, applied to the specific case of Germany. In ten essays (three never before published and one published only in German), Confino offers a distinct view of German nationhood in particular and of nationhood in general as a product of collective negotiation and exchange between the many memories that exist in the nation. The first group of essays centers on the period from 1871 to 1990 and explores how Germans used conceptions of the local, or Heimat, to identify what it meant to be German in a century of ideological upheavals. The second group of essays comprehensively critiques and analyzes the ways laypersons and scholars use the notion of memory as a tool to understand the past. Arguing that the case of Germany contains particular characteristics with broader implications for the way historians practice their trade, Germany as a Culture of Remembrance examines the limits and possibilities of writing history.

Zu allen Zeiten haben sich Frauen auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise für die Verbesserung ihrer Lebensbedingungen und Rechte eingesetzt. Die Geschichten der starken Frauen im vorliegenden Band zeigen den langen Weg gesellschaftlicher Veränderung, den sie zurückgelegt haben im Kampf um Ausbildung, soziale Sicherung, politische Mitwirkung, um die schlichte und doch so schwierige Anerkennung von Frauenrecht als Menschenrecht. Frauen, die sich engagierten und mit den Klischees brachen, durften keinen Beifall erwarten. Sie mussten wissen, was ihnen die Menschen und die Sache wert waren, für die sie vorgegebene Pfade verließen und Neuland beschritten. Viele von ihnen erfuhren zu Lebzeiten keine Wertschätzung, und auch danach eher spärlich: Der Platz von Frauen, weiblichen Selbstentwürfen und Handlungsspielräumen ist in der herkömmlichen Sicht auf Geschichte weitgehend untergeordnet. Wenn für die Allgemeinheit erinnert wird, stehen nach wie vor Männer im Zentrum. Das muss anders werden. Denn Frauen wie die, deren Leben und Wirken hier beschrieben sind, haben das Fundament dafür gelegt, dass Frauen und Männer heute gleiche Rechte haben. Ihr Weg sollte uns Ansporn sein, fortgesetzt und kraftvoll für wirkliche Geschlechtergerechtigkeit einzutreten. This wide-ranging collection, consisting of 50 essays by leading international scholars in a variety of fields, provides an overview of the reception history of a major literary genre from Greco-Roman antiquity to the present day. Section I considers how the 5th- and 4th-century Athenian comic poets defined themselves and their plays, especially in relation to other major literary forms. It then moves on to the Roman world and to the reception of Greek comedy there in art and literature. Section II deals with the European reception of Greek and Roman comedy in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern periods, and with the European stage tradition of comic theater more generally. Section III treats the handling of Greco-Roman comedy in the modern world, with attention not just to literary translations and stage-productions, but to more modern media such as radio and film. The collection will be of interest to students of ancient comedy as well as to all those concerned with how literary and theatrical traditions are passed on from one time and place to another, and adapted to meet local conditions and concerns.

Luise Kautsky entwirft hier fünfzehn Portraits wichtiger Frauen der internationalen Arbeiter*innenbewegung. Der Reigen umfasst neben Rosa Luxemburg auch heute noch vertraute Namen wie Jenny Marx und Clara Zetkin. Dazu gesellen sich aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum die mittlerweile weniger bekannten Sozialistinnen Luise Zietz, Oda Olberg, Minna Kautsky, Emma Ihrer, Lenchen Demuth oder Julie Bebel. Hinzu kommen die erste dänische Ministerin Nina Bang sowie die beinahe vergessenen russischen Revolutionärinnen Anna Ingermann, Eva Broido, Wera Sassulitsch, Fruma Frumkina und Estovia Ragozinnikowa. Die meisten der zwischen 1814 und 1886 geborenen Persönlichkeiten kannte Luise Kautsky persönlich, mit vielen war sie eng befreundet. Luise Kautsky (1864-1944) gehörte zu ihren Lebzeiten zu den meist geachtetsten Frauen der internationalen sozialistischen Bewegung. Luise Kautskys damaliger Bekanntheitsgrad kann überhaupt nicht überschätzt werden. Er reichte sogar bis in die menschengemachte Hölle der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager. Als sie als 80-jährige nach Auschwitz-Birkenau verschleppt wurde, retteten Mitgefangene Luise Kautsky vor der Gaskammer, indem sie sie von der Selektionsrampe in den Krankenblock des Lagers schmuggelten. Dort starb Luise Kautsky am 8. Dezember 1944.
