Ausgangspunkt zur vorliegenden Studie bilden die Romane "Venus im Pelz" von Leopold von Sacher-Masoch und "Shades of Grey" von E. L. James. Im Fokus der Analyse stehen vor allem die beiden Frauenfiguren sowie deren Entwicklung und charakterliche Besonderheiten. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob es sich in deren Fall um Vertreterinnen des vermeintlich ‘schwachen Geschlechts’ oder doch vielmehr um starke Frauen handelt. Beide Romane behandeln eine heterosexuelle sado-masochistische Beziehung und nehmen in ihrem jeweiligen historischen Kontext eine Ausnahmestellung in der Literatur ein. Im ersten Kapitel werden die Werke deshalb grob vorgestellt und die Umstände erläutert, unter welchen sie erschienen sind. Auch kulturelle Entwicklungen, ausgelöst durch die Veröffentlichung der Werke, werden in den Blick genommen. Da es sich in beiden Werken um heterosexuelle Beziehungen handelt, in denen sich die Frauenfiguren befinden, werden des Weiteren auch die Männerfiguren bzw. die Männlichkeitsformen näher beleuchtet. Wichtig ist dies, um deren didaktischen Einfluss auf die Frauenfiguren verstehen zu können. In der Forschungsliteratur häufig thematisiert, wird auch die Problematik des Neins eine Rolle in der vorliegenden Arbeit spielen.
