MCC Centre for Next Technological Futures Studies on Innovation, Technologies and Regions, Volume 1 As cyberpunk writer William Gibson famously said, “The future is already here—it’s just not evenly distributed.” This ironic statement is particularly relevant when we look at the map of innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems in Europe, where we can easily see deep regional imbalances. But while the future of technology is nearly impossible to predict, it could be discovered by those companies—the startups whose basic working method is trial and error. In addition, the current deafening hype around artificial intelligence is also reigniting the debate about robots and their impact on our economy and society. And these are the main reasons this book is about startups and robots. The studies conducted at the Centre for Next Technological Futures, Mathias Corvinus Collegium, Budapest, raise questions such as: How does geographic proximity to venture capital affect startups at different stages of development? While startups in Europe are concentrated in a handful of large cities, what opportunities do smaller cities have that specialise in Industry 4.0? What factors influence the use of industrial robots in different European countries, and how does the story of industrial robots differ from the emerging new story of robots in the service sector? Incubators and accelerators can increase the chances of survival of startups, but are those institutions that only chase a quick return on investment really the most successful? Launching a startup is like climbing a mountain, just maybe more treacherous. I say this as I have spent years as a backpacker and entrepreneur. While hiking through the Alaskan Tundra, I feared brown bears and crevasses. Yet, nothing prepared me for the responsibility of payroll for over 200 families relying on my business plan to feed their children. Unlike traditional software, the mere smell of hardware sensors and robot gearing sends shivers through most investors, with red flags arising from the perceived capital inefficiencies and intense research and development. This is coupled with a high talent requirement before launching even a minimum viable product, as these inventions demand a cross-section of skills: mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. To set out on the trail of uncrewed success, machine inventors and founders require a detailed field guide to meet customer demand and financing objectives. My goal for this book is to help you at a pivotal point in your ideation process and, at the same time, introduce you to a cadre of potential mentors. Through interviews with some of the most respected luminaries in this field, I aim to help fortify your resolve to follow your passions and build a billion-dollar company. The chapters of this book have been organized like a field guide, as if you are setting out on a trip in the wild. Just like it’s essential to satiate yourself before scaling mountains, fast-tracking your innovation into the hands of early adopters is vital for achieving success on Main Street.

There is no doubt that the proliferation of entrepreneurial activity is a current trend. Start-ups enable an effective transformation of knowledge, generating high added value to society. The objective of this book is to address the financing of the entrepreneurial process as a necessary element to articulate a solid business fabric, based on taking advantage of new opportunities. The book is structured in two parts. The first part takes as a reference the lack of financing in the entrepreneurship process and analyses different sources of financing available to entrepreneurs depending on the phase in which the project is located. The second part of the book analyses innovation and its links to the financing of start-ups, addressing the impact of emerging technologies and fintech services and the support of artificial intelligence. Finally, the book concludes with an examination of decentralized finance (DeFi), as an idea that is changing the financial world, giving rise to new financial paradigms.

Although highly ambitious and sophisticated, most attempts at using robotic processes in architecture remain the exception; little more than prototypes or even failures at a larger scale. This is because the general approach is either to automate existing manual processes or the complete construction process. However, the real potential of robots remains unexploited if used merely for the execution of highly repetitive mass-fabrication processes: their capability for serial production of non-standard elements as well as for varied construction processes is mostly wasted. In order to scale up and advance the application of robotics, for both prefabrication and on-site construction, there needs to be an understanding of the different capabilities, and these should be considered right from the start of the design and planning process. This issue of AD showcases the findings of the Architecture and Digital Fabrication research module at the ETH Zurich Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, directed by Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler, which explores the possibilities of robotic construction processes for architecture and their large-scale application to the design and construction of high-rise buildings. Together with other contributors, they also look at the far-reaching transformations starting to occur within automated fabrication: in terms of liberation of labour, entrepreneurship, the changing shape of building sites, in-situ fabrication and, most significantly, design. Contributors: Thomas Bock, Jelle Feringa, Philippe Morel, Neri Oxman, Antoine Picon and François Roche. ETH Zurich contributors: Michael Budig, Norman Hack, Willi Lauer and Jason Lim and Raffael Petrovic (Future Cities Laboratory), Volker Helm, Silke Langenberg and Jan Willmann. Featured entrepreneurs: Greyshed, Machineous, Odico Formwork Robotics, RoboFold and ROB Technologies.

Startup Valuation written by Roberto Moro-Visconti and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-27 with Business & Economics categories.

This second edition offers a primer on the valuation of startups and scaleups. Innovative startups are characterized by high growth potential that usually absorbs liquidity. These features are unattractive for traditional banks, which are replaced by other specialized intermediaries such as venture capital or private equity funds, which diversify their portfolios and base their strategies on a multi-year exit. Startups coexist in an evolving ecosystem with established firms, to which they transfer innovativeness, technology, flexibility, and time-to-market speed, contributing to reinventing the business models and receiving feedback from mature firms on the current market features, the existing clients, and their unsatisfied needs. The valuation paradigms represent a central issue for any startup seeking external finance, either from family and friends or through a wider professional network. This updated book, complemented by practical cases (for instance, FinTechs, digital platforms, and e-Health applications), offers a guide to practitioners, students, and academics about the trendy valuation patterns of startups based on their strategic business planning.
