Roe and Dobbs in Context describes long-term demographic changes that underlie Roe v. Wade and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and concludes that, as the Court suggests in Dobbs, Americans accept women’s participation in politics and hence in formulating law and government policy. The book examines the state of American public opinion on abortion and its impact on government regulation, investigates whether culture or religion is the source of the morality that underlies U.S. law on abortion and thus whether law-embodied protections of religion apply to government efforts to restrict abortion access. Finally, Larry Barnett reviews and critiques social science studies of the impact of law on the incidence of abortion and considers possible side effects of anti-abortion law along with two historical events (the War on Drugs and Prohibition) that, together with an evident need for access to abortion, indicate there will be a negligible long-term impact on abortion frequency in America from abortion-hostile law.

Clear, intuitive and written with the social science student in mind, this book represents the ideal combination of statistical theory and practice. It focuses on questions that can be answered using statistics and addresses common themes and problems in a straightforward, easy-to-follow manner. The book carefully combines the conceptual aspects of statistics with detailed technical advice providing both the ‘why’ of statistics and the ‘how’. Built upon a variety of engaging examples from across the social sciences it provides a rich collection of statistical methods and models. Students are encouraged to see the impact of theory whilst simultaneously learning how to manipulate software to meet their needs. The book also provides: Original case studies and data sets Practical guidance on how to run and test models in Stata Downloadable Stata programmes created to work alongside chapters A wide range of detailed applications using Stata Step-by-step notes on writing the relevant code. This excellent text will give anyone doing statistical research in the social sciences the theoretical, technical and applied knowledge needed to succeed.

By bringing together top-notch demographers, sociologists, economists, statisticians and public health specialists from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America to examine a wide variety of public and private issues in applied demography, this book spans a wide range of topics. It evaluates population estimates and projections against actual census counts and suggests further improvement of estimates and projection techniques and evaluation procedures; new techniques are proposed for estimating families and households and particular attention is paid to the much-discussed topic of access to health care. Coverage extends to factors influencing health status and elder abuse, child bearing and labor market analysis and the effects of education on labor market outcomes of native white American and immigrant European populations. Methodologically rigorous and pragmatically useful, Emerging Techniques in Applied Demography also examines a wide variety of public and private issues under the field of applied demography. It provides a broad overview of research topics and also reflects substantial development in the field of applied demography. It also bridges the gap between theory and research by providing several examples of work of distinguished applied demographic.

Highly recommended by the Journal of Official Statistics, The American Statistician, and other top statistical journals, Applied Survey Data Analysis, Third Edition provides an up-to-date overview of state-of-the-art approaches to the analysis of complex sample survey data. Building on the wealth of material on practical approaches to descriptive analysis and regression modeling from the first and second editions, this third edition further expands the topics covered and presents more step-by-step examples of modern approaches to the analysis of survey data using the newest statistical software procedures. New to the Third Edition: Applied Bayesian methods for the analysis of complex sample survey data using available software implementing these methods State-of-the-art methods and software for the analysis of survey data collected from non-probability samples Software for modern applications of machine learning techniques to complex sample survey data A completely revamped website providing code for replicating all the analyses illustrated in the book using Stata, SAS, SPSS, R, Mplus, SUDAAN, WesVar, and IVEware New end-of-chapter exercises, allowing for practice implementing the methods, including Bayesian analysis exercises Updated summaries of the newest literature on the analysis of survey data collected from complex samples An updated review of software packages currently available for the analysis of complex sample survey data Designed for readers working in a wide array of disciplines who conduct secondary analyses of survey data as part of their applied work, this book continues to provide a practical and accessible guide to the analysis of survey data. Continuing to use an example-driven approach to clearly illustrate analysis methods and software, the third edition contains many new examples and practical exercises based on recent versions of real-world survey data sets. Although the authors continue to use Stata for most examples in the text, they also offer the newest code for replicating the examples in other popular software packages on the book’s revamped website.

Applied Statistics for the Social and Health Sciences provides graduate students in the social and health sciences with the basic skills that they need to estimate, interpret, present, and publish statistical models using contemporary standards. The book targets the social and health science branches such as human development, public health, sociology, psychology, education, and social work in which students bring a wide range of mathematical skills and have a wide range of methodological affinities. For these students, a successful course in statistics will not only offer statistical content but will also help them develop an appreciation for how statistical techniques might answer some of the research questions of interest to them. This book is for use in a two-semester graduate course sequence covering basic univariate and bivariate statistics and regression models for nominal and ordinal outcomes, in addition to covering ordinary least squares regression. Key features of the book include: interweaving the teaching of statistical concepts with examples developed for the course from publicly-available social science data or drawn from the literature thorough integration of teaching statistical theory with teaching data processing and analysis teaching of both SAS and Stata "side-by-side" and use of chapter exercises in which students practice programming and interpretation on the same data set and course exercises in which students can choose their own research questions and data set. This book is for a two-semester course. For a one-semester course, see http://www.routledge.com/9780415991544/
