"Between 1984 and 1988 New Zealand's fourth Labour Government undertook the most comprehensive revision of economic policy which the country had ever seen. Subsidies were abolished, the tax system reformed and state-owned enterprises moved steadily down the path to privatisation. The process became known as "Rogernomics" after the Minister of Finance, Roger Douglas. Douglas became Euromoney's "Finance Minister of the Year" and an internationally admired economic reformer. At home his policies proved more controversial. Although Labour was convincingly re-elected in 1987, a year later the consensus benind Rogernomics collapsed. Roger Douglas and two other ministers left an increasingly divided administration. A major struggle over economic direction lay ahead. Nonetheless, the face of the New Zealand economy had changed irrevocably. In this book, Influential analysts, journalists and participants in the process of reform examine the events and impact of Rogernomics. "Rogernomics : reshapig New Zealand's economy 1984-1988" is an account of an individual's determination to effect change in the teeth of political opposition and institutional inertia."--Back cover.

What drives economic growth in New Zealand? How have we been impacted by globalisation and the financial crisis? And what will shape our future productivity and competitiveness? In this book leading economists Ralph Lattimore and Shamubeel Eaqub bring together key data to provide a readable and analytical introduction to the contemporary New Zealand economy. Small and open, the New Zealand economy is frequently buffeted by changing international commodity prices and interest rates as well as shifts in domestic policy. To make sense of our dynamic economy, Lattimore and Eaqub interpret data on key economic indicators over time - GDP and interest rates, population, employment and productivity levels, trade and investment, government accounts. They focus particularly on two issues of key importance to contemporary New Zealand: globalisation and the rise of the Asian economics over the past thirty years; and the origins and continuing effects of the 2007-08 Global Financial Crisis. The New Zealand Economy includes case studies by Professors Gary Hawke and Philip McCann. Rich with local data and case studies, The New Zealand Economy is a clear and concise assessment of the current structure and performance of New Zealand's economy from a historical and global perspective. The book is an ideal supplementary text for undergraduates and MBA students as well as a pocket primer for New Zealanders involved in business and policy.

State policy-making in New Zealand in recent years has undergone a fundamental transformation from social democratic Keynesianism, to New Right monetarism. Like its predecessor, State and Economy in New Zealand, this book critically examines this important shift by considering the interrelationship between the state, the economy and society in New Zealand, while providing an historical analysis of these changes over prolonged periods of time. An appreciation of the broader historical context is essential for a full understanding of the post-1984 reforms. The book investigates the major changes in New Zealand's political economy that have taken place during the twentieth century, focusing in particular on the post-war era. The period falls into two distinct epochs. The first, from 1945-1973, was characterized by economic prosperity and by social integration and political stability at least until the late 1960's. The second, from 1974 to the present, has been characterized by economic stagnation, societal conflict, and political instability. The Political Economy of New Zealand will be of interest to students of New Zealand politics, economics, history, sociology, education and public policy.

Well-being in New Zealand is generally high, although there is room for improvement in incomes, housing affordability, distribution, water quality and GHG emissions. Economic growth is projected to remain around 21⁄2 per cent. The main risks to the outlook are rising trade restrictions and a housing market correction. Labour market reforms have been initiated to increase wages for the low paid but will need to be implemented cautiously to minimise potential adverse effects. Substantial planned increases in bank capital requirements should reduce the expected costs of financial crises but might reduce economic activity.

The FIRE economy – built on finance, insurance and real estate – is now the world’s principal source of wealth creation. Its rise has transformed our political, economic and social landscapes, supported by a neoliberal regime that celebrates markets, profit and risk. From rising inequality and ballooning household debt to a global financial crisis and fiscal austerity, the neoliberal ‘orthodoxy’ has brought instability and empowered the few. Yet it remains remarkably resilient, even resurgent, in New Zealand and abroad. In 1995 Jane Kelsey set out a groundbreaking account of the neoliberal revolution in The New Zealand Experiment. Now she marshals an exceptional range of evidence to show how this transfer of wealth and power has been systematically embedded over three decades. Today organisations and commentators once at the vanguard of neoliberal reform, including the IMF and Financial Times journalist Martin Wolf, are warning the current model is unsustainable. A post-neoliberal era beckons. In The FIRE Economy Kelsey identifies the risks posed by FIRE and the barriers embedded neoliberalism presents to a progressive, post-neoliberal transformation – and urges us to act. This is a book New Zealand cannot afford to ignore.

This collection of invaluable essays explores, analyzes and critically evaluates the interaction between globalization and New Zealand sovereignty. The volume is the first to seriously address this subject in a systematic fashion. It pursues three interrelated lines of enquiry: the impact of globalization on the policy making machinery of the New Zealand state; the development of New Zealand political culture, including its sense of national identity; during the globalization era; and New Zealand's role on the international stage in a globalizing world. The book reveals the paradoxes of New Zealand's encounter with globalization. It will provide essential reading for specialists of globalization and for general readers interested in the complex national experience of New Zealand.

This book provides a comprehensive study of the economic history of New Zealand. It is for use as a textbook, and will be of interest to economic historians for its comprehensive coverage of the subject. It provides a clear and readable account that will be accessible to those without a background in economics. The book covers the period since European settlement, with particular emphasis on the postwar economy. It deals with the economic problems encountered in establishing a trading economy in New Zealand and in maintaining it and adapting it to the evolving international economy. It looks closely at the development and performance of different sectors of the economy, the influence of the government and the response to international economic conditions. It also considers the way in which New Zealand society has been shaped by the problems encountered and by the solutions to those problems.

Before 1984 New Zealand was insulated by high levels of protectionism and with a degree of State intervention and regulation unparalleled elsewhere in the western world. Since then New Zealand has experienced one of the most far reaching economic reform programmes of any developed economy. The book describes and analyses the radical economic reform programme undertaken in New Zealand since 1985. These reforms included deregulation of the financial sector, removal of various forms of assistance to producers, particularly in the agricultural sector, increased import liberalisation, radical tax reform, a major overhaul of the public sector and the privatisation of state enterprises. The book seeks to explain why a Labour Government embarked upon the sort of reform programme normally considered the preserve of right-wing administrations elsewhere. It argues that New Zealand's experience provides important lessons for policy-makers elsewhere.
