Ontario-born jazz pianist Lou Hooper (1894–1977) began his professional career in Detroit, accompanying blues singers such as Ma Rainey at the legendary Koppin Theatre. In 1921 he moved to Harlem, performing alongside Paul Robeson and recording extensively in and around Tin Pan Alley, before moving to Montreal in the 1930s. Prolific and influential, Hooper was an early teacher of Oscar Peterson and deeply involved in the jazz community in Montreal. When the Second World War broke out he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and entertained the troops in Europe. Near the end of his life Hooper came to prominence for his exceptional career and place in the history of jazz, inspiring an autobiography that was never published. Statesman of the Piano makes this document widely available for the first time and includes photographs, concert programs, lyrics, and other documents to reconstruct his life and times. Historians, archivists, musicians, and cultural critics provide annotations and commentary, examining some of the themes that emerge from Hooper’s writing and music. Statesman of the Piano sparks new conversations about Hooper’s legacy while shedding light on the cross-border travels and wartime experiences of Black musicians, the politics of archiving and curating, and the connections between race and music in the twentieth century.

A favored student and comrade of Mozart, and Haydn's successor as music director to the Esterhazy court, Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778 1827) was considered in his lifetime to be one of Europe's greatest composers and pianists. For his craftsmanship and sense of 18th-century style, Hummel was thought to be a true representative of his age, an "elder statesman of Viennese Classicism" ("Grove"). His compositions for solo piano reflect his essential qualities of classical grace, melodic elegance, and brilliant virtuosity fully evident in this compilation of 15 of Hummel's most important keyboard works: Rondo, Op. 11; Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 13; Fantasie, Op. 18; Rondo-Fantasie, Op. 19; Sonata in F Minor, Op. 20; Caprice, Op. 49; "La Bella Caprissiosa" (Polonaise), Op. 55; Variations, Op. 57; 24 Preludes, Op. 67; Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op, 81; Sonata in D Major, Op. 106; "La Contemplazione," Op. 107, No. 3; Rondo all'Ungherese, Op. 107, No. 6; Rondo Brillante, Op. 109; "La Galante" (Rondeau Brillant), Op. 120. Now pianists and music lovers can enjoy a treasury of Hummel's most representative piano music in this attractive, durable, and inexpensive edition, reproduced from authoritative Universal-Edition scores, edited by Charles de Beroit."

The year 1956 marked a point when British drama and theater fell into the hands of a group of young playwrights who revolutionized the stage. During that time, playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter made the British theater as rich, varied, and vital as any national theater in history. This reference chronicles the history of British theater from 1956 to 1995 by providing detailed information about the playwrights of that period. Included are entries for some three dozen British playwrights active between 1956 and 1995. Entries are arranged alphabetically to facilitate use. Each entry supplies biographical information, the production history for particular plays, a survey of the playwright's critical reception, an assessment of the dramatist's work, and primary and secondary bibliographies. A selected, general bibliography at the end of the volume directs the reader to important sources of additional information about this period in theater history.

Inner Life Of A Rational Agent written by Rowland Stout and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-03 with Philosophy categories.

A radical approach to the philosophy of mind, in which states of mind are identified with dispositions to behave in certain ways. The approach taken by Rowland Stout is a thoroughly up-to-date version of behaviourism, although not a form of behaviourism that denies the existence of consciousness, free will, rationality, etc., nor aims to reduce these to other sorts of things. Properly understood, the idea of being disposed to behave in a certain way is seen to be exactly as rich and interesting as the idea of being in a certain state of mind. The fact that our ways of behaving are sensitive to practical rationality is taken to be an essential aspect of our nature as conscious agents. And in describing such a version of practical rationality Stout claims we are describing the mental state of someone whose behaviour is sensitive to it.His account of behaviourism rests on two central notions - that of a causal disposition to behave and that of sensitivity to practical rationality. He explains and develops these notions in some detail, and then uses them to construct powerful and original accounts of belief, intention, knowledge, perception and consciousness.Key Features* A systematic and completely original theoretical approach to the philosophy of mind* A re-evaluation of the history of the philosophy of mind based on a rejection of the generally accepted arguments in the 1960s and 1970s used by functionalists against behaviourists* A serious engagement with the intuitively compelling issues concerning behaviourism.
