Since Karl Pearson wrote his paper on spurious correlation in 1897, a lot has been said about the statistical analysis of compositional data, mainly by geologists such as Felix Chayes. The solution appeared in the 1980s, when John Aitchison proposed to use Iogratios. Since then, the approach has seen a great expansion, mainly building on the idea of the `natural geometry' of the sample space. Statistics is expected to give sense to our perception of the natural scale of the data, and this is made possible for compositional data using Iogratios. This publication will be a milestone in this process.

An initial course in scientific data analysis and hypothesis testing designed for students in all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines Data Analysis for the Geosciences: Essentials of Uncertainty, Comparison, and Visualization is a textbook for upper-level undergraduate STEM students, designed to be their statistics course in a degree program. This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to data analysis, visualization, and data-model comparisons and metrics, within the framework of the uncertainty around the values. It offers a learning experience based on real data from the Earth, ocean, atmospheric, space, and planetary sciences. About this volume: Serves as an initial course in scientific data analysis and hypothesis testing Focuses on the methods of data processing Introduces a wide range of analysis techniques Describes the many ways to compare data with models Centers on applications rather than derivations Explains how to select appropriate statistics for meaningful decisions Explores the importance of the concept of uncertainty Uses examples from real geoscience observations Homework problems at the end of chapters The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

Statistical Methods And The Geographer written by Stanley Gregory and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-25 with Science categories.

First published in 1978. For the non-mathematician, however, even the simpler introductory books on statistics often raise considerable problems. In this second edition First, some attention has been given to the problem of the transformation of data in order to reinforce the appreciation of the need for normally-distributed data for the use of so many techniques. Secondly, the use of probability paper, at least in simple terms, has been introduced to illustrate the ways in which the labour of probability assessments can be circumvented. Thirdly, radical changes have been made, plus considerable expansion added, to the theme of non-parametric testing, to provide a more systematic approach to what is a most important group of possible techniques for geographers. Fourthly, change and expansion are also reflected in the sections on correlation and regression, including some simple consideration of curvilinear relationships and the presentation of computational techniques more geared to the use of desk calculators rather than long-hand methods. Finally, the bibliography has also been expanded, to incorporate a wider range of books on techniques and a selection of research papers using such techniques in a geographical (or near-geographical) context.

Aspects Of Multivariate Statistical Analysis In Geology written by E. Savazzi and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-11-24 with Science categories.

The book presents multivariate statistical methods useful in geological analysis. The essential distinction between multivariate analysis as applied to full-space data (measurements on lengths, heights, breadths etc.) and compositional data is emphasized with particular reference to geochemical data. Each of the methods is accompanied by a practically oriented computer program and backed up by appropriate examples. The computer programs are provided on a compact disk together with trial data-sets and examples of the output. An important feature of this book is the graphical system developed by Dr. Savazzi which is entitled Graph Server. Geological data often deviate from ideal statistical requirements. For this reason, close attention has been paid to the analysis of data that contain atypical observations.

Special Features: · Offers a comprehensive treatment of statistics in geology.· Topics progress from background information to analysis of geological sequences, then maps, and finally multivariate observations.· The book places special emphasis on probability and statistics, including nonparametric statistics, constant-sum data, eigenvalue calculations, analysis of directional data, mapping and geostatistics, fractals, and multivariate analysis.· The text now includes numerous geological data sets that illustrate how specific computational procedures can be applied to problems in the Earth sciences. All data sets are available on the book's companion Web site.· Each chapter now ends with a set of exercises of greater or lesser complexity that the student can address using methods discussed in the chapter.· Provides expanded coverage of elementary probability theory.· The discussion of nonparametric methods has been expanded to address closure effects.· Coverage of eigenvalues and eigenvectors has been revised.· Includes a new section on singular value decomposition and the relationship between R- and Q-mode factor methods in the chapter on multivariate analysis.· The section on contour mapping has been revised to reflect modern practices.· Includes revised coverage of the many varieties of kriging and provides of series of simple demonstrations that illustrate how geostatistical methodologies work.· Includes a discussion of fractals, a promising area of future research.· The section on regression has been expanded to include several variants that have special significance in the Earth sciences.
