Branch And Bound Applications In Combinatorial Data Analysis written by Michael J. Brusco and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-22 with Business & Economics categories.

There are a variety of combinatorial optimization problems that are relevant to the examination of statistical data. Combinatorial problems arise in the clustering of a collection of objects, the seriation (sequencing or ordering) of objects, and the selection of variables for subsequent multivariate statistical analysis such as regression. The options for choosing a solution strategy in combinatorial data analysis can be overwhelming. Because some problems are too large or intractable for an optimal solution strategy, many researchers develop an over-reliance on heuristic methods to solve all combinatorial problems. However, with increasingly accessible computer power and ever-improving methodologies, optimal solution strategies have gained popularity for their ability to reduce unnecessary uncertainty. In this monograph, optimality is attained for nontrivially sized problems via the branch-and-bound paradigm. For many combinatorial problems, branch-and-bound approaches have been proposed and/or developed. However, until now, there has not been a single resource in statistical data analysis to summarize and illustrate available methods for applying the branch-and-bound process. This monograph provides clear explanatory text, illustrative mathematics and algorithms, demonstrations of the iterative process, psuedocode, and well-developed examples for applications of the branch-and-bound paradigm to important problems in combinatorial data analysis. Supplementary material, such as computer programs, are provided on the world wide web. Dr. Brusco is a Professor of Marketing and Operations Research at Florida State University, an editorial board member for the Journal of Classification, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Classification Society of North America. Stephanie Stahl is an author and researcher with years of experience in writing, editing, and quantitative psychology research.

The Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report 2024 is the latest edition of the series formerly knownas Poverty and Shared Prosperity. The report emphasizes that reducing poverty and increasingshared prosperity must be achieved in ways that do not come at unacceptably high costs tothe environment. The current “polycrisis”—where the multiple crises of slow economic growth, increased fragility, climate risks, and heightened uncertainty have come together at the sametime—makes national development strategies and international cooperation difficult.Offering the first post-Coronavirus (COVID)-19 pandemic assessment of global progress on thisinterlinked agenda, the report finds that global poverty reduction has resumed but at a paceslower than before the COVID-19 crisis. Nearly 700 million people worldwide live in extremepoverty with less than US$2.15 per person per day. Progress has essentially plateaued amidlower economic growth and the impacts of COVID-19 and other crises. Today, extreme povertyis concentrated mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and fragile settings. At a higher standard moretypical of upper-middle-income countries—US$6.85 per person per day—almost one-half of theworld is living in poverty. The report also provides evidence that the number of countries that have high levels of incomeinequality has declined considerably during the past two decades, but the pace of improvementsin shared prosperity has slowed, and that inequality remains high in Latin America and theCaribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa. Worldwide, people’s incomes today would need to increasefivefold on average to reach a minimum prosperity threshold of US$25 per person per day.Where there has been progress in poverty reduction and shared prosperity, there is evidence ofan increasing ability of countries to manage natural hazards, but climate risks are significantlyhigher in the poorest settings. Nearly one in five people globally is at risk of experiencing welfarelosses due to an extreme weather event from which they will struggle to recover. The interconnected issues of climate change and poverty call for a united and inclusive effortfrom the global community. Development cooperation stakeholders—from governments, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to communities and citizens actinglocally in every corner of the globe—hold pivotal roles in promoting fair and sustainabletransitions. By emphasizing strategies that yield multiple benefits and diligently monitoring andaddressing trade-offs, we can strive toward a future that is prosperous, equitable, and resilient.

Statistical Information And Likelihood written by D. Basu and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

It is an honor to be asked to write a foreword to this book, for I believe that it and other books to follow will eventually lead to a dramatic change in the current statistics curriculum in our universities. I spent the 1975-76 academic year at Florida State University in Tallahassee. My purpose was to complete a book on Statistical Reliability Theory with Frank Proschan. At the time, I was working on total time on test processes. At the same time, I started attending lectures by Dev Basu on statistical inference. It was Lehmann's hypothesis testing course and Lehmann's book was the text. However, I noticed something strange - Basu never opened the book. He was obviously not following it. Instead, he was giving a very elegant, measure theoretic treatment of the concepts of sufficiency, ancillarity, and invariance. He was interested in the concept of information - what it meant. - how it fitted in with contemporary statistics. As he looked at the fundamental ideas, the logic behind their use seemed to evaporate. I was shocked. I didn't like priors. I didn't like Bayesian statistics. But after the smoke had cleared, that was all that was left. Basu loves counterexamples. He is like an art critic in the field of statistical inference. He would find a counterexample to the Bayesian approach if he could. So far, he has failed in this respect.
