Steaming Over the North Yorkshire Moors is the story of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a pinnacle of the rail preservation movement. Author Robin Jones, editor of Heritage Railway magazine, tells the story of how the line began in 1836 as Rocket inventor George Stephenson's Whitby & Pickering Railway, its conversion to a steam railway and its years under the London & North Eastern Railway and British Railways before its closure by Dr Beeching - with the accompanying protests. The line would later be saved by volunteers and reopened step by step. Eventually, in a ground-breaking move, services were extended back over the main line to Whitby. Today the line regularly receives upwards of 350,000 visitors a year from across the UK, and indeed the world. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is now by far the most popular steam railway in Britain and probably the world, not only because of its stunning moorland scenery and magnificent main locomotive fleet, but also because it featured in the prime time ITV 1960s police drama Heartbeat for 18 years, fans of which are still drawn to what is already a tourism hotspot today. Moors Steam also features the story of the line's locomotives, the flagship being A4 streamlined Pacific No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, which is the British post-war steam speed record holder.

Keith Widdowson visited the North Eastern Region of British Railways on over forty occasions during the final eighteen months of steam powered passenger services. With the odd exceptions (usually for railtours) most of the locomotives were neglected, run down, filthy, prone to failure and often only kept their wheels turning courtesy of the skills of the crew coaxing them along with loving care. Far from the scenic delights so often justifiably portrayed of the Yorkshire countryside, the ever-dwindling numbers became corralled within the industrialized heartland of Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and Normanton. Here, Widdowson recalls that bygone era, leading an almost nomadic nocturnal existence on his self-imposed "mission" of stalking the endangered "Iron Horses" in one of their final habitats. He was often far from alone in his quest. The "Haulage-bashing" fraternity comprised of like-minded enthusiasts from throughout Britain, often congregated, lemming like, on the one-coach early morning mail trains, the Summer Saturday holidaymaker trains or the Bradford portions; indeed any passenger service with a steam locomotive at its front From the many disappointments of thwarted possibilities to the euphoric joy of unexpected catches, together with over 130 contemporary images, Riding Yorkshire's Final Steam Trains is a compelling snapshot of the race against time at the end of the golden age of steam.

This fantastic guide traces the history of, arguably, the most popular heritage railway in Britain from the origins of the line in the 1830s through the good, bad and controversial times, up to the present day. Every year since 1973, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has transported hundreds of thousands of visitors in preserved steam and diesel-hauled trains between Pickering and Grosmont through an ancient landscape of unmatched beauty. When those trains started to run regularly to and from Whitby in 2007, it revived a service started by the Whitby & Pickering Railway Company back in 1836. The history of the NYMR is a fascinating one that will do well to be remembered. This book explores the journey, development and changes of the NYMR and is a fantastic guide to how the railway industry has changed over time.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the UK's leading heritage railway, carrying holidaymakers from the popular seaside resort of Whitby across the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors to the market town of Pickering. The line has been made famous by the TV programme 'Heartbeat', in which the station and village at Goathland features prominently as the fictional Aidensfield, and more recently by Channel 5's 'fly on the wall' documentary 'Yorkshire Steam Railway'. The author is not only a skilled photographer, but also a full time member of the railway's staff, which gives him a unique ability to capture the behind the scenes activities on the railway.

Yorkshire has, within its boundary, vast areas of unspoilt countryside said to be the greenest in England. Yet this historic county was also at the heart of the Industrial Revolution with its extensive coalfields, textile mills and steel foundries. The demands of these industries saw the rapid growth of railways to provide links from the coalfields, and access to their markets to the north and south of the country and overseas via the ports on the east and west coasts. This intense railway development also led to the county becoming a major centre for locomotive construction. The subsequent demise of these industries and the associated closure of sections of the railway network cleared the landscape of much of the industrial skyline of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However the Heritage movement generally and railway enthusiasts in particular have ensured that not all is lost. Thanks to their efforts Yorkshire now has some of the best steam and heritage railways in the country. From their stunning portfolios Mike and Karl Heath take us on a photographic journey around the county. Visit the world¿s oldest working railway, the Middleton Railway in Hunslet, Leeds. Take a journey through the Yorkshire Dales along the idyllic rural line of the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Travel back in time to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, a complete branch line, set in the 1950s and the first standard gauge railway sold by British Rail to a preservation society. Then explore the bleak expanse of heather-carpeted moorland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before climbing the steeply-graded Settle to Carlisle Railway line through Settle and onto the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct. This book provides ample evidence of great days out available for families and enthusiasts alike on the Heritage Railways of Yorkshire.

The wish to establish a direct route from London to the north, independent of its rivals, motivated the Midland Railway Company to undertake the construction of a line through the high fells and dales of Yorkshire and Cumberland. By 1876, the line connecting Settle with Carlisle, 73 miles to the north, had been completed to exacting mainline standards, thus establishing a through-route between London and Scotland. The Settle & Carlisle is well known for its many tunnels, bridges, cuttings and embankments, and for the stations and their ornate buildings, but the eye of the casual observer is drawn to the viaducts. First among these is Ribblehead which has become a honeypot for tourists, its 24 arches rising magnificently 104ft above Batty Moss. Other such constructions are of note, Dent Head, Artengill and Dandry Mire viaducts, all major edifices built with considerable difficulty in hostile locations. In fact, the whole route has left an indelible mark, its bold man-made structures contrasting with and enhancing the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales.Surviving the threat of closure during the 1980s, the line has seen the popularity of steam-hauled rail tours grow in recent years. Today, two or three workings may be observed each month, and during high summer it's no longer unusual to see two or more steam tours each week. It's these trains and their locomotives which are the subject of this book as we take a pictorial journey along the spectacular 33 miles of route which lie within the Yorkshire Dales National Park between Langcliffe in the south and Crosby Garrett in the north.
