This volume strives to give comprehensive information about the main aspects of the behaviour and limit states of steel plated structures. In following this objective, the volume presents a complete scientific background (profiting from the fact that the authors of the individual parts of the publication have personally been very active in the corresponding fields of research for an extended period of time), but also establishes design recommendations, procedures and formulae. The significance of the volume may be seen in its challenging current concepts of the analysis of steel plated structures, encouraging progress in the field, and thereby establishing an advanced basis for a more reliable and economical design.

Steel plated structures are important in a variety of marine and land-based applications, including ships, offshore platforms, power and chemical plants, box girder bridges and box girder cranes. The basic strength members in steel plated structures include support members (such as stiffeners and plate girders), plates, stiffened panels/grillages and box girders. During their lifetime, the structures constructed using these members are subjected to various types of loading which is for the most part operational, but may in some cases be extreme or even accidental. Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures reviews and describes both fundamentals and practical design procedures in this field. The derivation of the basic mathematical expressions is presented together with a thorough discussion of the assumptions and the validity of the underlying expressions and solution methods. Particularly valuable coverage in the book includes: * Serviceability and the ultimate limit state design of steel structural systems and their components * The progressive collapse and the design of damage tolerant structures in the context of marine accidents * Age related structural degradation such as corrosion and fatigue cracks Furthermore, this book is also an easily accessed design tool which facilitates learning by applying the concepts of the limit states for practice using a set of computer programs which can be downloaded. In addition, expert guidance on mechanical model test results as well as nonlinear finite element solutions, sophisticated design methodologies useful for practitioners in industries or research institutions, selected methods for accurate and efficient analyses of nonlinear behavior of steel plated structures both up to and after the ultimate strength is reached, is provided. Designed as both a textbook and a handy reference, the book is well suited to teachers and university students who are approaching the limit state design technology of steel plated structures for the first time. The book also meets the needs of structural designers or researchers who are involved in civil, marine and mechanical engineering as well as offshore engineering and naval architecture.

The main aim of this book is to provide practical advice to designers of plated structures for correct and efficient application of EN 1993-1-5 design rules. In chapter 1 the purpose, the scope and the structure of the book is explained. In chapter 2 a rather detailed and commented overview of EN 1993-1-5 design rules is given following the structure of the standard. Shear lag effect as well as plate buckling problems due to direct stresses, shear forces, transverse forces and interactions of these effects are covered. This chapter also includes a reduced stress method and a finite element analysis approach to plate buckling problems. A large number of design examples illustrate the proper application of individual design rules. Chapter 3 and 4 bring two complete design examples on a crane runway and a box-girder bridge.

Steel and other types of plated structures are used in a variety of applications from aircrafts to ships and offshore platforms to bridges, power plants and cranes. A key issue in the use of these structures is their stability behaviour under compressive stress. Analysis and design of plated structures reviews the wealth of research in this important area and its implications for design, safety and maintenance. The book considers the various types of buckling that plated structures are likely to encounter. Chapters also review buckling in a range of materials from steel to differing types of composite. The book also discusses the behaviour of differing types of components used in steel-plated structures. These components include steel beams and columns as well as curved, stiffened, corrugated, laminated and other types of plate design. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Analysis and design of plated structures is a useful standard reference for civil engineers involved in the design of plated structures. Discusses the behaviour of steel and other plated structures when under stress Extensive coverage of the key research in this important area Compiled by an international team of distinguished contributors

Due to the relatively large slenderness of plated structures, the proof of adequate buckling resistance is crucial for dimensioning. Plate buckling is a stability problem of a compression-loaded plate and is generally characterized by failure of the structure prior to achieving plastic component resistance. The stability verification of welded plated structures assisted by finite element analysis (FEM) is becoming increasingly prevalent in applied engineering. The rules and examples given in this book might illustrate the correct application of the numerical models and give background information on the FEM-based design of welded plated structures. Aside from technical background information on calculation methods and software requirements, modelling, solution settings, evaluation, and verification as a key part of this manual, benchmark examples and worked examples are given. They not only allow the user to better understand the procedure and the background but can also serve as test examples to prove the validity of their own numerical calculations. We are sure that this manual will contribute to improved knowledge of the application of FEM for the design of plated structures, and thereby enhance the acceptance of FEM design in practice.

Plated Structures written by R. Narayanan and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983-12-01 with Architecture categories.

First published in the 1983. This is third book of a planned set of volumes on the stability and strength of structures. The collapse a few years ago of four large box girders during erection precipitated a considerable research effort in many countries on the various design aspects of plated structures (such as box girders and plate girders). This book is addressed to structural designers and post-graduate students, a fundamental knowledge of structural mechanics is taken for granted; nevertheless, sufficient introductory material is included in each chapter to make the subject matter easily readable. This volume contains eight chapters, all of which are written by persons who have made notable contributions to the relevant subject area. The first four chapters are devoted to various aspects of the design of a plate girder and concentrate largely on the associated stability problems in shear. The four remaining chapters are largely concerned with stability problems in compression, such as those met in box girder flanges and ship hulls. Chapter 8 also highlights some of the complexities of interaction between different stresses. Thus the book covers a wide range of topics of relevance to both the designer and the student.
