Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 The literature of prussian-german history in Eng lish is very scanty and most of it relates to the last seventy-five years. The period covered by this brief biography has been treated by Seeley in his Life and Times of Stein. That diffuse work is nevertheless a very substantial composite of the German historical work available forty years ago. It does a little more for Stein biographically than can be found in Pertz's undigested collection of documents. The appearance of Lehmann's great biography and the controversial literature it aroused and of many special studies and new interpretations of men and of phases of the his tory of the years after Frederick the Great have made both Pertz and Seeley unsatisfactory. With this new material at hand it was clearly worth while to study anew the work of Stein. In doing this I have especially sought to give even in this brief compass a more ade quate account than has hitherto been available in Eng lish of the economic conditions preceding the edict of 1807 and to point out that its importance is as a pro gram rather than as a reorganization of the Prussia of that day. Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 Baron vom Stein, Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein, to give him his full name, was born in the ancestral home, a castle only by courtesy, in the little city of Nassau on the Lahn, October 26, 1757. He has left us a sketch of his life,1 which industrious biograph ers have supplemented so that we have a fairly satis factory picture of his youth and preparations for his life work. His ancestors for centuries had been nobles in the ranks of the imperial knights and for many genera tions had lived in the Lahn valley, one of the most picturesque of the side valleys of the Rhine. Here they had been the retainers and staunch defenders of the counts of Nassau, from whom William of Orange was descended, and many of the name of Stein had done good work in the service of other states within and without Germany. The ruins of their old castle stand today on the jutting rock which gave them their family name, on the hill above the city of Nassau. The crest of the hill is crowned with the ruined castle of the counts of Nassau. Both families, Nassau and Stein, had joined their cause with that of Luther. Indeed, the surviving line of the Steins was founded by a mem ber who broke his vows as a canon at Trier and mar ried in the same year that Luther did. The Course Of German Nationalism written by Hagen Schulze and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-03-21 with History categories.

The arduous path from the colourful diversity of the Holy Roman Empire to the Prussian-dominated German nation-state, Bismarck's German Empire of 1871, led through revolutions, wars and economic upheavals, but also through the cultural splendour of German Classicism and Romanticism. Hagen Schulze takes a fresh look at late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German history, explaining it as the interaction of revolutionary forces from below and from above, of economics, politics, and culture. None of the results were predetermined, and yet their outcome was of momentous significance for all of Europe, if not the world.

Napoleon Bonaparte's character and achievements have always divided critics and commentators. In this compelling new biography Frank McLynn draws on the most recent scholarship and throws a brilliant light on this most paradoxical of men - as military leader, lover and emperor. Tracing Napoleon's extraordinary career, Mc Lynn examines the Promethean legend from the Corsican roots, through the years of the French Revolution and the military triumphs, to the coronation in 1804 and ultimate defeat and imprisonment. Napoleon the man emerges as an even more fascinating character than previously imagined, and McLynn brilliantly reveals the extent to which he was both existential hero and plaything of Fate; mathematician and mystic; intellectual giant and moral pygmy; Great Man and deeply flawed human being.
