Anatta is the Buddhist teaching on the nonexistence of a permanent, independent self. It’s a notoriously puzzling and elusive concept, usually leading to such questions as, "If I don’t have a self, who’s reading this sentence?" It’s not that there’s no self there, says Rodney Smith. It’s just that the self that is reading this sentence is a configuration of elements that at one time did not exist and which at some point in the future will disperse. Even in its present existence, it’s more a temporary arrangement of components rather than something solid. Anatta is a truth the Buddha considered to be absolutely essential to his teaching. Smith shows that understanding this truth can change the way you relate to the world, and that the perspective of selflessness is critically important for anyone involved in spiritual practice. Seeing it can be the key to getting past the idea that spirituality has something to do with self-improvement, and to accessing the joy of deep insight into reality.

We frequently engage with that which we consciously perceive not to be real, yet fantasy, despite its pervasive presence and strong role in everyday life through its connection to identities, communities, desires, and meanings, has yet to be properly defined and researched. This book examines fantasy from a performance theory perspective. Drawing on multidisciplinary literature, it presents ethnographic and art-based research on live action role-playing games to explore fantasy as a bodily and negotiated phenomenon that involves various kinds of engagement with one’s surroundings. Overall, this book is a study of various forms and roles that fantasy can take on as part of contemporary Western culture. The study suggests that fantasy emerges as a different type of interpretation of normalised performance and reality, and can thus provide individuals with the tools to wield agency in everyday life. The book will appeal to scholars of sociology, cultural and media studies, literature and performance studies.

Reconstructing Reality In The Courtroom written by W. Lance Bennett and has been published by Quid Pro Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-13 with Law categories.

Reconstructing Reality in the Courtroom explains what makes stories believable and how ordinary people connect complex legal arguments and evidence presented in trials to assess guilt and innocence. The explanation takes the core elements of narrative—the who, what, where, when, how, why—and shows how average people who hear hundreds of stories every day use the connections between these elements to assess credibility. A series of simple experiments outside the courtroom provides evidence for the explanation, showing that there is little relationship between the actual truth of a story and the degree to which the story is believed to be true by an audience of random listeners not familiar with the teller. So, how do jurors make a particular legal judgment? Based on courtroom observation, trial transcripts, and credibility experiments, Bennett and Feldman create a method of diagramming stories that shows exactly what makes some stories more believable than others. Prosecutors and defense attorneys can use this method of analyzing stories to weigh the strategies and tactics available to them; scholars can use it to assess the process of legal judgment. Now in its Second Edition, this much-cited resource adds a new preface by the authors, as well as new forewords from divergent perspectives. From his experience in law practice, William S. Bailey notes that the book offers “timeless insights” as its authors “adapt a broad structural framework of storytelling to the criminal trial context, making it come alive in the dynamic real world courtroom environment.” Law-and-society scholar Anna-Maria Marshall writes that the book's “emphasis on storytelling will resonate with scholars studying legal consciousness, where narrative plays an important theoretical and methodological role.... This new edition will be a welcome addition to the Law and Society community.” "Reconstructing Reality in the Courtroom is as timely as it was when this classic was first published. Here Bennett and Feldman provide great insight into the importance of storytelling as a basis of justice in American criminal trials. It deserves very wide readership." — Elizabeth F. Loftus Distinguished Professor, University of California, Irvine Author, "Eyewitness Testimony" (1996) "This classic law and society study on the power of legal stories is a rich and compelling empirical analysis of the dynamics of story construction in trials. The book remains an essential resource for law students, litigators, academics, and any others who wish to understand the interpretive significance of the stories told in the courtroom." — Jeannine Bell Professor of Law and Neizer Faculty Fellow, Indiana University Maurer School of Law — Bloomington Author, "Hate Thy Neighbor" (2013) Part of the Classics of Law & Society Series from Quid Pro Books.

Glorious Reality Of War written by Michael Mendoza and has been published by Author House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-31 with Fiction categories.

The Glorious Reality of War is not a biography. Rather, it is a fictionalized account of the experiences of Civil War veteran Charles Wesley Rickard based upon his own recollection recorded in a seventeen page letter to his grown daughter in 1925. He was fifteen when he joined as a fifer because: "They said I was too young for a private and would only muster me in as a fifer as the Col.'s son W.W. Byam had already enlisted as a drummer. (I had never seen a fife) but I could use a rifle, and was bound to go as something."

Ordinary Faith written by Clay Lein and has been published by Xulon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11 with Religion categories.

FINDING REAL FAITH IN ORDINARY LIFE. So often we think that the spiritual stuff of life happens in cathedrals or chapels; like faith is supposed to have its proper place. But the truth is that you and I are surrounded by moments of great faith all the time. We hardly see them but they are there - in the midst of ordinary life all around us. Catching sight of those moments could completely change the way we see the world. These stories are taken from a very ordinary life. You will laugh at the way that God can be found in simple things like flat tires, crying kids, rock tumblers and cats. You might even cry as you recognize yourself in a story and discover that God is there in the midst of your ordinary life too. Clay Lein is a husband, father and pastor living in Dallas, Texas. He began his career as an engineer with Intel Corporation, completed his MBA in 1990 and in a not so obvious next step became a priest in 1996. His ability to find faith and hope in ordinary life has helped thousands to discover ordinary faith within themselves.
