Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Der Fall der Berliner Mauer und des Eisernen Vorhangs [1989] wurde global als Liquidierung des Kalten Krieges gefeiert und von Historikern weltweit als das “Schicksalsjahr” der neueren deutschen Geschichte und das Ende einer markanten historischen Epoche Europas identifiziert. Trotz der euphorischen Reaktion auf den Mauerfall und der teilweise utopischen Visionen von einem deutschen Neubeginn gab es auch zahlreiche Stimmen, die von einer unsichtbaren Mauer, einer ‘Mauer im Kopf’, warnten, deren Abbau nur langfristig möglich wäre, wenn überhaupt. Während die Medien ein oberflächlich-einseitiges, sensationalisiertes und politisch-ideologisch motiviertes Bild der historischen Situation der Wende zeichneten, vermittelten literarische Werke in Ost und West Einblicke in die komplex-vielschichtige Tiefenstruktur der historisch und gesellschaftlich bedingten Spannungen, die nach der anfangs euphorischen Reaktion auf die für die meisten Deutschen, Ost und West, unerwartete deutsch-deutsche Vereinigung rasch Gestalt annahmen, obwohl es von allem Anfang auch Zweifler gab, denen es schwerfiel, an das “Glück” der Deutschen zu glauben. So vertraut Thomas Rosenlöcher seinem Tagebuch am 9. November [1989] angesichts der Maueröffnung betroffen “Sprachlosigkeit” an und Klaus Schlesinger notiert zum Mauerfall lakonisch: “ [...] selbst in der Nacht, als die Mauer fiel und sich die halbe Stadt in den Armen lag, bin ich [...] ins K.O.B. gegangen, habe schnell drei Bier getrunken und mich ins Bett gelegt. Und das Feuerwerk zu Sylvester, in dem unser Brandenburger Tor sich der Welt in so flammendem Licht zeigte, habe ich, rein zufällig, in der Auslage eines Videoladens in Paris gesehen.” Die am 4. November 1989 auf dem Berliner Alexanderplatz Versammelten, unter ihnen Christa Wolf, Christoph Hein, Stefan Heym, wiederum sahen sich an der Schwelle eines von klassischen Humanitätsidealen und von der Forderung der Französischen Revolution nach Freiheit, Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit getragenem Sozialismus, ein naiver politischer Optimismus, an den auch Günter Grass glaubte und sich verpflichtet fühlte. Hans J. Morgenthau wird in den USA zu den großen Intellektuellen des Landes gezählt. Um so erstaunlicher ist die Tatsache, dass sein umfassendes Werk in Deutschland in nur fragmentarischer Weise rezipiert wurde. Der 1904 in Coburg geborene Jude konzipierte die erste als solche anerkannte systematische Theorie der internationalen Politik, die zu Beginn des Kalten Krieges weltweiten Einfluss erlangte. Obwohl Morgenthau auf vorwissenschaftliche anthropologische Grundannahmen zurückgreift, erweisen sich seine historisch-empirischen Analysen der Weltpolitik, basierend auf dem Theorem des Mächtegleichgewichts, als oftmals zutreffend. Politik wird von Morgenthau als Machtausübung verstanden, welche besonderen Gefahren unterliegt und deshalb innen- wie zwischenstaatlich sorgfältig kontrolliert und balanciert werden muss. Auch der Beobachter der Weltpolitik der Gegenwart kann von der Kenntnis des Politischen Realismus Morgenthaus profitieren.
