Die jüngsten finanz- und gesellschaftspolitischen Ereignisse rücken Fragen zur Bedeutung von Wohlstand, Reichtum und Vermögen in ein neues Licht. Gemeinsam wurden theoretische Positionen überdacht und Begriffe wie beispielsweise Verantwortung, Engagement, Ungleichheit, Erbschaften und Generationen neu diskutiert. Im Anschluss an eine zu diesem Thema durchgeführte Tagung gibt der vorliegende Band einen umfassenden Überblick zu derartigen Fragen. Vorgestellt werden neue empirische Ergebnisse und theoretische Positionen zum gesellschaftlichen Engagement Vermögender, dem Sozialprofil sowie dem Lebensstil von Reichen und der Genese von Wohlstand und Reichtum.

This study examines the transformation of the medieval foundations considering the plurality of the Reformation. The religious arguments and the question in what way foundations might be described as gifts are focused in particular.

Stiftungen sind ein weitverbreitetes Phänomen, das in der Geschichte verschiedenartige Ausprägungen angenommen hat. Wie konstituierten sich diese Ausprägungen? Gab es universalhistorische Aspekte, die auf das individuelle Stiftungsverhalten einwirkten? Inwieweit prägten zeitlich und räumlich spezifische Aspekte die individuelle Ausgestaltung einer Stiftung? Wie wurde ferner mit der stets impliziten Spannung zwischen Stifterwillen und Stiftungsvollzug im Laufe der Zeit verfahren? Diesen Fragen geht die Autorin in ihrer Analyse nach und untersucht, in welchen Bedeutungskontexten die verschiedenen Aspekte des Stiftens im frühneuzeitlichen Hamburg eingebettet waren. So kann sie Stiftungen als komplexe Gabenform aufzeigen, die einen Zugang zu den Denk- und Funktionsweisen städtischer Gesellschaften eröffnet. Foundations are a widespread phenomenon, which has existed in a variety of forms throughout history. It is worthwhile to examine this variety closely. Were there universal aspects having an effect on the individual founder's behaviour regardless of time and space? Did specific aspects deriving from social, political, or religious backgrounds of a certain place at a certain time leave their mark on the individual embodiment of a foundation? How was the ever implicit tension between the founder's will and the following realization of the foundation dealt with? The study discusses these questions and researches into the meanings embedding the different aspects of foundations in early modern Hamburg. Thus it highlights foundations as a complex gift exchange, which permeated many areas of life.

Katherine of Alexandria was a major object of devotion within medieval Europe, ranking second only to the Virgin Mary in the canon of female saints. Yet despite her undoubted importance, relatively little is known about the significance and function of her cult within the German-speaking territories that stood at the heart of Europe. Anne Simon's study adds a welcome new interdisciplinary perspective to the study of Saint Katherine and the wider ecclesiastical landscape of a medieval Europe poised on the edge of religious change. Taking as a case study the wealthy and politically influential merchant city of Nuremberg, this book draws on a wide variety of textual and visual sources to explore interrelated themes: the shaping of urban space through the cult of Saint Katherine; her role in the moulding and advertising patrician identity and alliances through cultural patronage; and patrician use of the saint to showcase the city's political, economic, cultural and religious importance at the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Further , the book reveals the construction of exemplarity in Saint Katherine's legend and miracles and their resonance within the context of the city and the Dominican Convent of Saint Katherine, whose nuns came from the same status-aware, confident patrician elite that so loyally supported successive Emperors. Filling a significant gap in current research, the work has much to offer scholars of medieval history, hagiography, art history, German studies, cultural and urban studies. Hence it not only expands our understanding of Saint Katherine's importance in German-speaking territories, but also adds to the picture of her cult in its European perspective.
