Still Interpreting Vatican Ii written by Ormond Rush and has been published by Paulist Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Religion categories.

In this original book, Ormond Rush makes a significant contribution to the growing body of scholarship on Vatican II. He proposes that a comprehensive interpretation of Vatican II requires that the interpreter not only attempt a reconstruction of the "spirit" of the council emerging during the conciliar debates, but also take into account the various linguistic dimensions of the "letter" of the documents. Attention to genre, structure, rhetoric, intratextuality and intertextuality are all significant in reconstructing the "letter" of the council. In addition, he states that reconstruction of the "spirit" and "letter" must be supplemented by attention to another factor: the post-conciliar reception of the council from different contexts throughout the world over the last forty years. All three of these phases of interpretation must be kept in correlation. The book ends with a proposal for a reception pneumatology that calls for greater recognition of the work of reception as the work of the Holy Spirit of the council. Highlights: --fills a significant gap in the debate regarding Vatican II: clarity in the discussion regarding hermeneutical principles --no book in any language focuses specifically on the principles for interpreting Vatican II --calls for a more comprehensive approach that includes not only attention to the process of original formulation, but also to the texts in themselves --suggests a way through the current impasse in the interpretation of Vatican II +

2020 Catholic Press Association first place award, theology--theological and philosophical studies This book is unique in the literature about Vatican II. From the manifold issues debated at the council and formulated in its sixteen documents, Ormond Rush proposes that the salient features of “the vision of Vatican II” can be captured in twenty-four principles. He concludes by proposing that these principles can function as criteria for assessing the reception of the conciliar vision over the last five decades and into the future. There is no other book that attempts such a comprehensive synthesis of the council’s vision for renewal and reform of the Catholic Church.

The Eyes Of Faith written by Ormond Rush and has been published by CUA Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Religion categories.

Winner of the 2010 Lynlea Rodger Australia Theological Form (ATF) Press Theological Book Prize The Eyes of Faith presents a systematic theology of the sense of the faithful (sensus fidelium) and shows the fundamental and necessary interrelationship between sensus fidelium, tradition, Scripture, theology, and the magisterium. Ormond Rush provides fresh perspectives on a number of issues. He proposes that tradition and Scripture are the products of the sensus fidelium and that the inspiration of Scripture is best understood in terms of the Holy Spirit working through the sensus fidelium. In addressing the role of the sensus fidei in the lives of individual believers, the book provides a unique approach to the way Christians make sense of their faith within the diverse contexts of daily life. It shows how the imaginative capacity of the sensus fidei forms a foundational notion for understanding the diversity of spiritualities, inculturations, and contextualizations of the Gospel in the history of the church up to the present. This ecclesial activity of interpreting the Christ event through the sensus fidelium enables the church to proclaim the Gospel in new times and cultures throughout history. The Eyes of Faith proposes that, for an effective teaching of the faith to contemporary Christians, the distinctive roles of the magisterium and of theology must be conceived primarily in terms of, and in relationship to, the ecclesial Spirit-given capacity of the sensus fidelium. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ormond Rush is lecturer of theology and former president of St. Paul's Theological College in Banyo, Australia, and is president of the Australian Catholic Theological Association. He is the author of Still Interpreting Vatican II: Some Hermeneutical Principles and The Reception of Doctrine: An Appropriation of Hans Robert Jauss' Reception Aesthetics and Literary Hermeneutics. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK: "In addition to its internal argumentation, the book's extensive footnotes, Scriptural references, and Church documents will make it a tremendously valuable tool for advanced researchers in several theological areas, including pneumatology, ecclesiology, Scripture studies, and hemeneutics. . . . Highly recommended." -- C. A. Montevecchio, Choice "Some works of scholarship stand out, providing a point of reference and showing the way forward. Orm Rush's study is in this class, and it is not surprising that its first release by CUA Press is a splendid hardback volume. This work makes a significant contribution to Catholic Theology." -- Rev. John Thornhill SM, The Australasian Catholic Record "Rush provides a theologically perceptive panorama of the sensus fidelium at work in the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition to offering numerous insights--usually beneficial and sometimes provocative--Rush's study is extraordinarily well-researched. . . . [T]his volume is an outstandingly creative and comprehensive theological study of the grace of the Holy Spirit acting through the sensus fidelium in the reception of revelation in the church."--John Ford C.S.C., Theological Studies "Rush has here provided us with a sophisticated study of theological hermeneutics, as well as a foundational work in ecclesiology."--Lawrence S. Cunningham, Commonweal "This detailed and well-argued book explores the phenomenon of reception in both the Bible and in contemporary Roman Catholic tradition. . . . An insightful study for those interested in the newest wave of Roman Catholic dogmatic theology, which tends to draw deeply from biblical sources as well as Vatican teaching, this book genuinely advances discussions of the doctrine of reception." --Aaron Klink, Religious Studies Review

A Holy Yet Sinful Church written by Jeanmarie Gribaudo and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-11 with Religion categories.

This text examines three key moments in the developing theology of the church’s holiness and sinfulness in the twentieth century: the ressourcement movement of the 1930s to the 1950s, the Second Vatican Council (1962–65), and the pontificate of John Paul II (1978–2005). The aim of this text is to make accessible the works of Emile Mersch, Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Yves Congar, Karl Rahner, and Charles Journet that discuss the holiness and sinfulness of the church and to demonstrate how these works were influential in composing the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium. The author then considers how this developing theology is put into practice in Pope John Paul II’s millennial program, which centers on admitting that the Church in its members has sinned and needs to seek forgiveness.

Vatican Ii written by Gavin D'Costa and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-28 with Religion categories.

Gavin D'Costa breaks new ground in this authoritative study of the Second Vatican Council's doctrines on other religions, with particular attention to Judaism and Islam. The focus is exclusively on the doctrinal foundations found in Lumen Gentium 16 that will serve Catholicism in the twenty first century. D'Costa provides a map outlining different hermeneutical approaches to the Council, whilst synthesising their strengths and providing a critique of their weaknesses. Moreover, he classifies the different authority attributed to doctrines thereby clarifying debates regarding continuity, discontinuity, and reform in doctrinal teaching. Vatican II: Catholic Doctrines on Jews and Muslims expertly examines the Council's revolutionary teaching on Judaism which has been subject to conflicting readings, including the claim that the Council reversed doctrinal teachings in this area. Through a rigorous examination of the debates, the drafts, the official commentary, and with consideration of the previous Council and papal doctrinal teachings on the Jews, D'Costa lays bare the doctrinal achievements of the Council, and concludes with a similar detailed examination of Catholic doctrines on Islam. This innovative text makes essential interventions in the debate about Council hermeneutics and doctrinal teachings on the religions.

Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis' post-synodal exhortation on love in the family, turned out to be one of the most controversial documents of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church in recent decades. It was published in April 2016 following the two "Synods of Bishops on the Family" held in 2014 and 2015. The document brought division amongst the Catholic hierarchy, theologians and pastors and nearly two years after its publication the exact meaning of the document and its implications for the Church are still a matter of dispute. A number of prelates present at the Synods indicated that these gatherings were animated by "the spirit of Vatican II." This work links the notion of "the spirit of Vatican II" with Amoris Laetitia and it argues that a hermeneutics of interpretation of the Second Vatican Council which focuses on following "the spirit of the Council" is the hermeneutics which can be, and in the future most likely will be, the predominant way of interpreting and implementing Amoris Laetitia. This book aims to provide a contribution to this hotly debated topic in the field of Catholic theology.

Convened by Pope John XXIII, the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) profoundly changed the self-image and life of the Catholic Church. But understanding, interpreting, and implementing Vatican II still remain a task far from completed. Pope Francis has given fresh impetus toward practicing the Council’s teaching about a humble, servant Church that pursues justice and peace for the whole world. This book explores and presents Vatican II’s developments in doctrine about divine revelation; the nature, mission, and collegiality of the Church; religious freedom; and the divine grace that reaches all human beings. It takes up the profound significance of the liturgy constitution, which opened the way for the Council’s subsequent teaching. In documenting the renewal and reform conveyed by the message and meaning of Vatican II, this book illustrates the scholarship and accessible style for which Gerald O’Collins has become renowned.

The death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI constituted two important elements in the broad theological and cultural landscape of Catholicism. This change of pontificate has also nourished the journalistic and political dispute about Vatican II, its history and its legacy, and not only the historiographical and theological debate. But the research on Vatican II is already proceeding forward and beyond the state of knowledge about the Council reached at the end of the 90s. For 21st century Catholics and theologians interested in understanding contemporary Catholicism in the light of Vatican II the intellectual undertaking is far from accomplished yet. The book offers comprehensive presentation of the theological and historiographical debate about Council Vatican II. The attempt to go beyond "the clash of interpretations" - Vatican II as a rupture in the history of Catholicism on one side, the need to read Vatican II in continuity with the tradition on the other - is necessary indeed because the ongoing debate about Vatican II is largely misrepresented by the use of "clashing interpretations" as a tool for understanding the role of the council in present-day Catholicism.
