A SPECTER is haunting the scientific world-the specter of com puters. All the powers of traditional science have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this specter: puristic theoreticians and tradition alistic experimentalists, editors and referees of prestigious journals, philosophers of science and mathematicians. Where is a pioneering computer simulation that has not been decried as unreliable by its opponents in power? The Computer Manifesto As a result of the enormous progress in computer technology made during the last few decades, computer simulations have become a very powerful and widely applicable tool in science and engineering. The main purpose of this . book is a comprehensive description of the background and possibilities for the application of computer simulation techniques in polymer fluid dynamics. Mod eling and understanding the flow behavior of polymeric liquids on the kinetic theory level is not merely a great intellectual challenge but rather a matter of immense practical importance, for example, in connection with plastics manu facture, processing of foods, and movement of biological fluids. The classical computer simulation technique for static problems in statis tical mechanics is the Monte Carlo method developed in the early 1950s. The name of this method underlines how unusual and strange the idea of using ran dom numbers in the exact sciences is at first glance. However, the Monte Carlo method is a rigorous and efficient means for evaluating moments and static spa tial correlation functions for given probability distributions.

Probabilistic Methods In Fluids Proceedings Of The Swansea 2002 Workshop written by Ian M Davies and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-06-13 with Mathematics categories.

This volume contains recent research papers presented at the international workshop on “Probabilistic Methods in Fluids” held in Swansea. The central problems considered were turbulence and the Navier-Stokes equations but, as is now well known, these classical problems are deeply intertwined with modern studies of stochastic partial differential equations, jump processes and random dynamical systems. The volume provides a snapshot of current studies in a field where the applications range from the design of aircraft through the mathematics of finance to the study of fluids in porous media.

This SpringerBrief covers the main scales of description of matter, starting at its finest level, the quantum scale, moving through ab-initio, molecular dynamics, coarse grained approaches, to finish at the scale of kinetic theory models that allows a nice compromise between the rich but expensive microscopic descriptions and the computationally cheap but sometimes too coarse macroscopic descriptions. The book addresses undergraduate and graduate students, as well as beginners in multi-scale modeling of materials.

This volume records the presentations and discussions at the Second Royal Society-Unilever Indo-UK Forum on 'Dynamics of Complex Fluids' which was the culmination of the six-month programme on this topic organised at the Issac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge University. The authors of this important volume present an up-to-date, wide-ranging view on developments in the analysis of complex fluid behaviour. Emphasis is placed upon the relation between small-scale structure and large-scale response: this brings together the approaches of molecular physics and continuum mechanics.Experiments, constitutive models and computer simulations are combined to yield new insights into the flow behaviour of polymer melts and solutions, colloidal and neutral particle suspensions, and pastes and soils.

Polymer and cell dynamics play an important role in processes like tumor growth, metastasis, embryogenesis, immune reactions and regeneration. This volume – based on an international workshop on numerical simulations of polymer and cell dynamics in Bad Honnef (Germany) in 2000 – provides an overview of the relevant mathematical and numerical methods, their applications and limits. The contributions are from the fields of applied and numerical mathematics, scientific computing, theoretical physics, molecular biophysics, cell and molecular biology as well as chemical and biomedical engineering. The volume will be of interest to scientists and advanced undergraduates in the fields of biotechnology, biomedicine, applied mathematics, biomathematics, biophysics and bioinformatics.

One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples. This open access book provides a thorough introduction to modeling turbulent, dispersed, two-phase flows. It explains the physical phenomena and governing laws at play, followed by a clear and systematic overview of the statistical tools used to develop simplified or coarse-grained models. With a pedagogical approach, the book uses practical examples to explain complex physical processes and stochastic methods, making it accessible to readers familiar with basic courses in statistical physics and applied mathematics. It also highlights emerging research areas and unexplored challenges in the field. Designed as a self-contained resource, this book is ideal for graduate students and junior researchers in various branches of physics. At the same time, it serves as a valuable reference for experts seeking deeper insights into turbulent, dispersed, two-phase flows.

By bringing together various ideas and methods for extracting the slow manifolds, the authors show that it is possible to establish a more macroscopic description in nonequilibrium systems. The book treats slowness as stability. A unifying geometrical viewpoint of the thermodynamics of slow and fast motion enables the development of reduction techniques, both analytical and numerical. Examples considered in the book range from the Boltzmann kinetic equation and hydrodynamics to the Fokker-Planck equations of polymer dynamics and models of chemical kinetics describing oxidation reactions. Special chapters are devoted to model reduction in classical statistical dynamics, natural selection, and exact solutions for slow hydrodynamic manifolds. The book will be a major reference source for both theoretical and applied model reduction. Intended primarily as a postgraduate-level text in nonequilibrium kinetics and model reduction, it will also be valuable to PhD students and researchers in applied mathematics, physics and various fields of engineering.

Injection Molding written by Rong Zheng and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book covers fundamental principles and numerical methods relevant to the modeling of the injection molding process. As injection molding processing is related to rheology, mechanical and chemical engineering, polymer science and computational methods, and is a rapidly growing field, the book provides a multidisciplinary and comprehensive introduction to the subjects required for an understanding of the complex process. It addresses the up-to-date status of fundamental understanding and simulation technologies, without losing sight of still useful classical approaches. The main chapters of the book are devoted to the currently active fields of flow-induced crystallization and orientation evolution of fiber suspensions, respectively, followed by detailed discussion of their effects on mechanical property, shrinkage and warpage of injection-molded products. The level of the proposed book will be suitable for interested scientists, R&D engineers, application engineers, and graduate students in engineering.
