In this book, Jean Gros tells his life story from his youth to his release from captivity as a prisoner of war. He was born in 1922 as the child of German-Romanian settlers, under the name Ioan Grosz, in the Romanian Banat. The family lives in the small village of Ivanda near the city of Timisoara, where they run a small farm. In this environment, characterised by simple living conditions, Ioan experiences a carefree and mostly happy childhood. This ends, however, when he begins a butcher's apprenticeship in a neighbouring village. From now on, he has to face the first hardships of life. However, this period of his life is still proceeding along the usual lines for the time and the region. This all changes abruptly when the Third Reich sets out to recruit new soldiers from the ranks of the Romanian Germans. Ioan also gets caught up in the mills of the Nazi war machine, and like most of his compatriots, ends up in the Waffen SS. As the book progresses, it describes his traumatic war experiences and the depriving circumstances under which the missions are carried out. During his sorties he is also wounded several times. Despite all adversity, he tries to maintain contact with his family and childhood sweetheart, but this is not always successful, and the uncertainty about his family's circumstances becomes his constant companion. The war ends for him with another wound and years of imprisonment. The vivid description of the events takes the reader on a journey through Jean's life, which is exemplary for that of many young Romanian-Germans of that era. The reader also gets an impression of the way of life and the further fate of this ethnic community.

Growing up with my Dad, I can't remember ever talking about the war. Not until he started to write down his memoirs did, I start to understand what formed and made him into the man he is. I am so proud of him for the time and thoughts he put into these writings. At times I wished that he would quit writing. I saw the pain, the anguish, and the nightmares that came back from those times in his life. As I read the pages, I was horrified by the things he endured and the terrible things he witnessed. There were days he couldn't write because of the memories that he thought were stored way back in his mind had come to life again in nightmarish and sleepless nights. He eventually fought them off and picked himself up, started where he left off until the next lost memory returned.I have to take some blame for this since it all started due to a conversation we had. Dad joined a local writers club at the Senior Center. He asked me what he should write about. He needed a topic. I suggested his memoirs. Once he got started there was no stopping him. He began to open up to me about the time in his life I knew nothing about. Like most people in that time era, they would leave the past in the past where it belongs so they wouldn't be haunted with it.He let me see the side of him that was unknown by me all the years with him. I always admired his talent to capture life and nature in his beautiful photography. His sharp mind, even at 94 years of age he is a walking encyclopedia.

Challenging the predominantly Euro-American approaches to the field, this volume brings together essays on a wide array of literary, filmic and journalistic responses to the decade-long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shifting the focus from so-called 9/11 literature to narratives of the war on terror, and from the transatlantic world to Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, the Afghan-Pak border region, South Waziristan, Al-Andalus and Kenya, the book captures the multiple transnational reverberations of the discourses on terrorism, counter-terrorism and insurgency. These include, but are not restricted to, the realignment of geopolitical power relations; the formation of new terrorist networks (ISIS) and regional alliances (Iraq/Syria); the growing number of terrorist incidents in the West; the changing discourses on security and technologies of warfare; and the leveraging of fundamental constitutional principles. The essays featured in this volume draw upon, and critically engage with, the conceptual trajectories within American literary debates, postcolonial discourse and transatlantic literary criticism. Collectively, they move away from the trauma-centrism and residual US-centrism of early literary responses to 9/11 and the criticism thereon, while responding to postcolonial theory’s call for a historical foregrounding of terrorism, insurgency and armed violence in the colonial-imperial power nexus. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of English Studies.
