"Sage advice for frustrated parents." KIRKUS REVIEWS Through their years of working with Middle Schoolers and their parents, Darryl Sollerh and Leslie King, LCSW, have developed a compassionate yet realistic approach that takes into consideration both the parent and child's point of view. Filled with real-life examples, they examine the likely flashpoints for family conflicts, from Middle Schooler social lives to their homework habits, from their misrepresentations to their calls for fairness, from their demands for independence to their need for dependence. Sollerh and King's approach, at heart, seeks to spark an empathetic awakening in both parent and child, not only as they each meet the initially difficult phases of any challenge or crisis, but also as they move into the future, guided by a new awareness capable of supporting their ongoing efforts to grow in a relationship of shared dialogs, mutual respect and deepening understanding.

If we yell threats at our kids all the time, we will never be able to raise happy kids. Though this kind of parenting actually causes harm to the child, no parent ever intends to do so. You must first retrain yourself if you want to raise a happy, well-behaved child. You have to adjust the way you respond to their actions and how you think. You must become aware of your triggers and work on your own healing. It is only at that point that you can start mending your bond with your kids. Most of the time, we yell because we're upset, furious, and, let's face it - helpless! rather than because we're trying to get them to listen. Yelling is never a good idea. All of us, the children, and everyone else in the universe are aware of this. We still yell, though. Being a positive parent is something your entire family will gain from. Your kids will be well-behaved and abide by your rules. By the end of the day, you'll feel less stressed. It won't feel like a war zone inside your home. Instead, you can build a family-friendly, peaceful, and loving environment in your house. This book explains why parenting styles that are either permissive or too strict don't work. You will discover how simple it is to adopt a positive approach to parenting. You will mend not just the relationship with your kids but also yourself as you discover how to be a positive parent.

Often people see the upbringing as the imposition of their tastes, requirements, tasks, plans, and dreams, like, ‘I bring him up the way he must grow, I know what he should be aware, what he should do.’ If someone sees the upbringing in this way, my attitude to this is negative, and I would choose another word: help in child’s development, formation, nurturing. Carl Rogers said that ‘an adult on a child could be compared to a gardener helping a plant. The gardener’s job is to supply water, provide the facility with the sunlight, fertilize the soil. That is, to create conditions for development but not to pull the top.’ If you pull the top in a direction that you chose, you won’t grow anything. Dialogue is a bit narrowed concept, I’d better say, mutual understanding, the mood for understanding the child. Yes, it is important when the child knows his parent, but the parent can find out more about his child. And what does it mean to understand the child? First and foremost, it ways to know his needs and to take them into account. The person’s needs vary not only with age but individually, depending on the trajectory along which the child moves. Therefore, it is important to hear the child in a dialogue, to understand why he doesn’t listen to you, what are the reasons for his refusals and rudeness. If your discussion includes ‘to hear,' I accept it. I reject any rough interpretations of the word ‘upbringing’ like if a child doesn’t listen, force him; if he talks rudely, corrects him; if he is offended, tell him, ‘there is nothing to be offended here, you are to blame for what has happened.” Free Gift Inside ;) Would You Like To Know More? Over 55% of your day is spent listening; yet only 2% of us have been trained in how to listen. What is poor listening costing you? Do you rush from meeting to meeting, your head buried in the last conversation you had, without time to think of the next? Or feel frustrated with unproductive discussions where the loudest in the room adds limited insight and drowns out everyone else? We usually think of these situations as communication problems; that we have not spoken our needs correctly or clearly. Yet, conflict, chaos and confusion are the costs of not listening. Many communication and listening books say the most important person in a conversation is the speaker - not true! This pocket-sized guide will help you to reconnect with your innate gift of deep listening, to create the right space to listen to yourself before you listen to others. You'll learn to listen beyond the words that are spoken, to add context and meaning and listen in to what's not being said. Deep Listening will help you move from confusion and conflict to thoughtful, insightful and powerful discussions that will transform not just your work, but your whole life.

As we all know, children have a hard time listening when we are shouting at them. Also, most of the time, we are shouting not because we are trying to make them listen, but because we are frustrated, angry and let's admit it - helpless! Shouting never helps the situation. We know that, the kids know that, everyone in the universe knows that. But we still shout. My first book was not just about not shouting, but about trying to understand your child through the different stages of their life. This book is actually a workbook that complements my first book; the chapters complement each other. Everything I've discussed in each of the chapters of my first book, I've explained more in this book, and added little exercises or tips that you can try or follow. The first book, as a standalone, is fine, as is this book, but together, they can help you (hopefully) to be the kind of parent that you want to be.
