V monografiji so predstavljene besedotvorne in pomenotvorne zmožnosti glagolov, ki označujejo zaznavanje s petimi čuti: vidom, sluhom, vohom, tipom in okusom. Delo temelji na stopenjski metodologiji, ki raziskovanje binarnega odnosa med motivirajočo in motivirano besedo razširi na odnos med netvorjeno besedo in vsemi njenimi neposrednimi in posrednimi tvorjenkami. Prvi del je posvečen opredelitvam osrednjih terminov: glagolov čutnega zaznavanja, stopenjskega besedotvorja in slovarskega pomena. Prikazan je tudi zgodovinski pregled razvoja stopenjske metodologije. Sledi leksikografski del, ki zajema 38 besedotvornih sestavov s 1195 stopenjskimi tvorjenkami. V nadaljevanju pa najdemo statistično analizo gradiva, in sicer z vidika besednovrstne pripradnosti tvorjenk, stopenj tvorjenosti in tvorbenih modelov. Osrednji del raziskave je osredotočen na analizo t. i. besedotvornih nizov, predvsem z vidika besedotvornega pomena, besedotvornih vrst in slovarskega pomena. Stopenjskobesedotvorna razčlenitev gradiva prikaže bogato sliko besedotvornega in pomenotvornega mehanizma v slovenščini, poleg tega pa monografija ponuja tudi predloge izboljšav slovarskih obravnav v SSKJ-ju.

V Besedotvornem atlasu slovenskih narečij (BASN) je obravnavano besedje iz pomenskega polja kulturne rastline, zbrano v 93 krajevnih govorih iz vseh sedmih narečnih skupin slovenskega jezika. Besedje je diferencirano tako na besedotvorni kot na leksično-besedotvorni ravnini in razvrščeno v pet pomenskih sklopov: Divja sadna drevesa, Nadzemni deli kulturnih rastlin, Slama, Sadni mošt in Sadno žganje. Zgradba atlasa je deloma tradicionalna (jezikovne karte s komentarji in gradivom), deloma inovativna, saj je v njem predstavljen model za geolingvistično analizo besedotvorno diferenciranega narečnega gradiva, na podlagi katerega je mogoče ugotavljati, ali imajo strukturni tipi leksemov in posamezna besedotvorna obrazila v narečjih svoje tipične areale, značilne in potrjene tudi za druge jezikovne ravnine. Jedrni del atlasa predstavlja dvaindvajset leksično-besedotvornih kart za posamezne slovarske pomene (npr. poimenovanja za ‘divjo hruško’, ‘nadzemni del krompirja’, ‘ajdovo slamo’, ‘jabolčni mošt’, ‘hruškovo žganje’ ...) ter sedemintrideset zbirnih besedotvornih kart, na katerih je prikazana struktura obravnavanih poimenovanj ter njihova prostorska razporeditev.

Definition is a basic activity of language, of particular importance to linguists because of its use of language to describe itself. Beyond this inherent significance as a crucial element of language study, definitions also provide a rich potential source of the information needed for Natural Language Processing systems. This book describes an investigation of the subset of general language used in definition sentences and the development of a taxonomy of definition types, a grammar of definition sentences and parsing software which can extract their functional components. The work is based on definition sentences used in one of the dictionaries from the Cobuild range, and the book includes a brief history of the development of monolingual English dictionaries, an assessment of the concepts of sublanguages and local grammars and a full exploration of the results of the analysis and of the present and future applications of the taxonomy, grammar and parser.

A lexically based, corpus-driven theoretical approach to meaning in language that distinguishes between patterns of normal use and creative exploitations of norms. In Lexical Analysis, Patrick Hanks offers a wide-ranging empirical investigation of word use and meaning in language. The book fills the need for a lexically based, corpus-driven theoretical approach that will help people understand how words go together in collocational patterns and constructions to make meanings. Such an approach is now possible, Hanks writes, because of the availability of new forms of evidence (corpora, the Internet) and the development of new methods of statistical analysis and inferencing. Hanks offers a new theory of language, the Theory of Norms and Exploitations (TNE), which makes a systematic distinction between normal and abnormal usage—between rules for using words normally and rules for exploiting such norms in metaphor and other creative use of language. Using hundreds of carefully chosen citations from corpora and other texts, he shows how matching each use of a word against established contextual patterns plays a large part in determining the meaning of an utterance. His goal is to develop a coherent and practical lexically driven theory of language that takes into account the immense variability of everyday usage and that shows that this variability is rule governed rather than random. Such a theory will complement other theoretical approaches to language, including cognitive linguistics, construction grammar, generative lexicon theory, priming theory, and pattern grammar.
