Nel panorama del monachesimo benedettino italiano l’obbedienza vallombrosana ha senza dubbio costituito una delle più vivaci e interessanti esperienze emerse dalla riforma ecclesiastica dell’XI secolo. L’attenzione degli storici, finora, si è concentrata prevalentemente sulle origini di questo movimento. Il presente volume, al contrario, tramite il duplice approccio alla storia della Casa madre e a quella dell’intero Ordine religioso, cerca di far luce anche sulle sue trasformazioni nella prima età moderna, con particolare attenzione al pieno e al tardo medioevo. Le tematiche prese in esame riprendono alcune fra quelle proposte dalla più recente storiografia italiana e internazionale, come la definizione istituzionale della congregazione, la gestione dei patrimoni pertinenti ai singoli chiostri, la tradizione degli studi, la documentazione archivistica, gli organi di controllo della disciplina comunitaria. In questo senso il libro intende illustrare quale sia stata la tradizione monastica vallombrosana nel periodo successivo ai convulsi decenni della sua prima comparsa, durante la lunga stagione che vide l’affermazione del nuovo Ordine religioso e il definirsi dei suoi rapporti, talora anche conflittuali, sia con la Chiesa che con i poteri laici.

In the Catholic countries of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Europe, communities of monks and nuns were growing in number and wealth. By 1750 there were at least 25,000 communities containing at least 350,000 inmates. They constructed vast buildings, dominated education, and played a large part in the practice and patronage of learning, music, and the arts. They also fulfilled an amazing variety of political, economic and social roles, notably in providing career opportunities for women. Yet many accounts of the period ignore them altogether. Prosperity and Plunder recovers this forgotten dimension of European history, assesses the importance of monasteries across Catholic Europe, and compares their position in different countries. It goes on to explain the almost complete destruction of the monasteries between 1750 and 1815 through reforming rulers, 'Enlightenment', and the French Revolution, and asks how much society gained and lost in the process.
