One of the most brilliant courtiers and military leaders in Renaissance France, Jacques de Savoie, duke of Nemours, was head of the cadet branch of the house of Savoy, a dynasty that had ruled over a collection of lands in the Western Alps since the eleventh century. Jacques’ cousin Emanuel Filibert, duke of Savoy and ruler of the Sabaudian lands, fought against Jacques, and each expanded their influence at the other’s expense, while also benefitting from the other’s position. This study examines the complex and rich relationship of the noble cousins that spanned the battlefields, bedchambers, courts, and backrooms of taverns from Paris to Turin to the frontiers between the Genevois and Geneva. Each prince played key roles in sixteenth-century European politics due to their individual and dynastic identities. Jacques’ apanage of the Genevois was a virtual state-within-a-state, the institutional expression of a simultaneously competitive and cooperative relationship between two branches of a sovereign house. Für die Außenpolitik Kurbayerns stellen die Verhandlungen der bayerischen Gesandten Freiherr von Haslang und Dr. Krebs in Münster eine entscheidende Zäsur in mehrfacher Hinsicht dar. Zum einen hat Kurfürst Maximilian I. von Bayern – der einzige Landesherr, der den gesamten Kriegsverlauf regierend mitgestaltete – mit der Entsendung dieser ständigen Gesandtschaft an den Westfälischen Friedenskongreß die diplomatischen Außenbeziehungen Bayerns wesentlich gefestigt. Aus der bisher einzigen Vertretung Bayerns am Heiligen Stuhl wurde ein immer dichteres diplomatisches Netz, das in die Zukunft weist. Zum anderen war diese entscheidende Zeitspanne ab dem Herbst 1644 dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Maximilian I. auf jeden Fall zu einem Verhandlungsfrieden gelangen wollte, notfalls auch durch scharfen Druck auf den Kaiser, die dynastischen Interessen des Hauses Habsburg dem Reichsfrieden hintanzustellen. Nach der Edition der Instruktion des Kurfürsten, die er seinen Gesandten mit auf den Weg gegeben hat und die seine Zielsetzungen deutlich werden läßt, behandelt der vorliegende Band die Anreise der Gesandten und die ersten Schritte zu einem geordneten Verhandlungsablauf. Die aus verschiedenen Quellenbeständen nun erstmals wieder in ihren Zusammenhang gebrachten Dokumente, die teilweise nur in Konzeptform überliefert sind, eröffnen einen grundlegenden Einblick in die Schwierigkeiten aller Gesandten, an einem derart großen, multinationalen Kongreß teilzunehmen. Die immer wieder an herausragender Stelle behandelten zeremoniellen Fragen erscheinen dem heutigen Beobachter leicht als von übertriebenem Prestigedenken gekennzeichnet, waren aber wichtig, um dem Kongress eine Struktur zu verleihen, den Status der Verhandlungspartner zu klären und damit Vorentscheidungen für die Entwicklung des europäischen Völkerrechts zu treffen.
