«Nessun’altra idea, più di quella di libertà, è così fondamentale per l’immagine che gli americani hanno di se stessi, come individui e come nazione». si apre con queste parole il magistrale ritratto degli stati uniti d’America che ha consacrato Eric Foner, Premio Pulitzer per la storia 2011, come uno degli storici più autorevoli del nostro tempo. il concetto di libertà, in America, è sempre stato terreno di lotta, soggetto a interpretazioni molteplici e concorrenti. La parola freedom, affascinante e ambigua, è già nella dichiarazione d’indipendenza e segna le fasi più importanti della storia del paese, tanto da essere presente in contesti diversi come le manifestazioni per i diritti civili e i discorsi di guerra post-11 settembre. a ben vedere, tutta la vicenda americana si riassume in questo concetto chiave: una verità vivente e incontrovertibile, per alcuni americani; un paravento e una crudele menzogna per altri. dalla rivoluzione settecentesca ai giorni nostri, per gli americani la libertà è stata insieme una terra promessa e un campo di battaglia, il più forte legame culturale e la più pericolosa linea di tensione. Gli stati uniti nascono con la dichiarazione che annovera la libertà tra i diritti inalienabili, poi in costituzione si propongono di assicurarne a tutti i benefici; per essa, o contro di essa, è stata combattuta la guerra civile; in suo nome si è ripetuta la battaglia contro la schiavitù e l’apartheid. E, infine, la difesa della libertà anche al di fuori dei propri confini è stato il criterio ispiratore – e insieme lo schermo ideologico – della politica estera americana, dalla seconda guerra mondiale alla guerra fredda, da cuba al Vietnam, dalla guerra del golfo a quella in Siria, come l’autore sostiene con forza nella nuova introduzione scritta appositamente per questa edizione italiana. Come nota Alessandro Portelli nella sua postfazione, la sottolineatura dei limiti della libertà americana non diventa per Foner l’occasione per una distruzione del mito americano, ma contribuisce piuttosto a rafforzare il senso di quanto centrale sia l’idea di libertà nell’identità di un paese che, pur nelle sue evidenti contraddizioni, non smette mai di cercarla.
