La lingua italiana non ha mai avuto un suo museo. Un museo grande, articolato, tecnologico come quelli dedicati ad altre lingue. A dispetto di progetti e tentativi, quel museo è rimasto un sogno: questo libro è un modo per realizzarlo. Aprire questo libro significa entrare in un ideale museo della lingua italiana e attraversare, pagina dopo pagina, una storia fatta di parole ma anche di oggetti da cui sprigionano suoni, colori, profumi, rumori, emozioni, ricordi, sapori. A ricostruire questa storia secolare, sessanta pezzi distribuiti in quindici sale disposte su tre piani corrispondenti ad altrettante epoche: l'italiano antico, moderno e contemporaneo. Quando l'Italia ancora non esisteva, Dante definì gli italiani come «le genti del bel paese là dove 'l sì suona». La lingua come essenziale punto di riferimento e il suono di quella parola - che serve a esprimere accordo e consenso - come base di una comune identità. L'italiano è stato per secoli una lingua fondata sul prestigio letterario: una lingua soprattutto scritta, perché il parlato era dei dialetti. Ma attraverso la lingua non passa solo la cultura intellettuale, passa l'intera vita di una comunità. Passano i cambiamenti sociali, i rivolgimenti politici, l'immaginario collettivo, le abitudini individuali. Ecco perché un viaggio nella storia della lingua italiana non può fermarsi alla lingua letteraria, ma deve prevedere molte tappe nei territori della lingua comune. E un museo della lingua italiana non può accontentarsi di esporre solo testi e documenti, ma deve lasciare spazio alla cultura materiale: agli oggetti che nel tempo hanno segnato la vita di tutti i giorni. Sala dopo sala, una teca dopo l'altra, i sessanta pezzi di questo museo virtuale ci accompagnano lungo un percorso che dalle più antiche testimonianze scritte arriva alla lingua dei predicatori e dei mercanti medievali, all'italiano stentato degli emigranti di fine Ottocento e dei soldati della Grande guerra, a quello pop della pubblicità, della televisione e della musica leggera fino al disinvolto e-taliano usato oggi nei social network. E ci aiutano a cogliere i profondi cambiamenti intervenuti, la ricchezza dei contributi apportati dalle tradizioni locali e dai continui scambi con le altre lingue. Ci permettono di ritrovare, sparse un po' ovunque nell'odierno villaggio globale, le storiche tracce della nostra lingua. Un ulteriore segno della sua vitalità, della sua bellezza, del fascino che ancora oggi l'italiano continua a esercitare in tutto il mondo.

Oggi, infine, la nostra lingua si dispone a dar voce musicale anche ai nuovi italiani, mettendosi a disposizione di nativi di altri idiomi e altre musiche. Dealing with the interconnections between music and the written word, this volume brings into focus an updated range of analytical and interpretative approaches which transcend the domain of formalist paradigms and the purist assumption of music’s non-referentiality. Grouped into three thematic sections, these fifteen essays by Italian, British and American scholars shed light on a phenomenological network embracing different historical, socio-cultural and genre contexts and a variety of theoretical concepts, such as intermediality, the soundscape notion, and musicalisation. At one end of the spectrum, music emerges as a driving cultural force, an agent cooperating with signifying and communication processes and an element functionally woven into the discursive fabric of the literary work.
